BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (9-4, 5-3 USA South) fell 78-50 in a Friday night USA South Conference showdown to first-place Southern Virginia University (9-4, 7-0 USAS) in Buena Vista, Virginia.
The Tornados were set back in the first half as the Knights outscored Brevard 18-12 in the first period, followed by a 21-11 second quarter that included a 13-3 run to close the half out. SVU hit four 3-pointers and shot 48% from the field in the first half, and forced a total of 15 BC turnovers. Conversely, Brevard shot just 33% and went 1-of-8 from distance. Southern Virginia got to the line 10 times in the first stanza, converting seven of its attempts.
The hosts kept their foot on the gas pedal, outpacing Brevard by a 17-point margin, 28-11 in the third quarter before closing the contest out in the final period, claiming the 28-point triumph.
Olivia Miller led all Brevard scorers with 17 points on eight field goals made and a free throw, and added four rebounds and a pair of steals to her ledger. Naliyah Boyce added nine points, while Makenna Parkins grabbed a game-best nine rebounds. Lexi Shepard recorded a game-high four steals in addition to her nine points offensively.
Alyssa Weiland led four double-digit Knight scorers with 16 points, while Ruth Kempler and Abigail Snyder each posted 14. Aysia Foster added 10 points and matched a team-high with five rebounds.
The Knights outpaced Brevard 52% to 30% from the field and hit a total of seven 3-pointers in the game.
The Tornados have a quick turnaround as Brevard heads down the road tomorrow to Staunton, Virginia for a rematch with Mary Baldwin University at 2 p.m. Brevard defeated MBU 82-53 at The Bosh last Wednesday, January 3.
