BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's basketball team (10-9, 5-3 USA South) used a second-half spark and never looked back, defeating Pfeiffer University (6-7, 3-3 USAS) 86-77 in a key USA South Conference game on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
Trailing for the entirety of the first half and the first 7:30 of the second period, a
Quincy Carter fastbreak layup off a steal put Brevard up 59-58 and gave the Tornados a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. BC went on to outscore the visiting Falcons 27-19 down the stretch to clinch the nine-point victory.
Junior guard
Kavan Horton put up an encore performance to his previous season-high 18-point performance on January 10 at Pfeiffer, this time notching a new collegiate career-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field to go alongside a 3-pointer, two made free throws, and six boards which matched Carter for the team lead. Horton scored 13 of his 23 points in the second half of play.
Senior guard
LB Boyette secured a new season-high with 15 points off the bench for the Tornados, going 5-of-9 from the field while knocking in a pair of 3-point jumpers. Carter turned in an all-around performance of 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks, while senior guard
Carson Evans also reached double figures with 10 points and two made 3-pointers.
Charles Reed and
Chancey Watson also swiped a pair of steals, as the Tornado defense forced 14 Falcon turnovers.
Pfeiffer's offensive output was anchored by Daymon Beckwith, who scored 22 points with nine made field goals. Daniel Fulp added 17 points, as Alex Cunningham (13 points) and Ty Black (11 points) joined Beckwithb and Fulp in the double-digit scoring column. Fulp and Doug Smith led all rebounders with nine boards apiece, while Fulp was very active defensively with five steals.
The Falcons lit it up in the first half, shooting 57% from the field while Brevard kept pace at a 48% clip. The script flipped in the second stanza, as the Tornados knocked in their field goals at a 63% rate and clamped down on defense, as Pfeiffer only shot at a 36% mark from the field. Brevard made six 3-point baskets, assisted on 19 of its 32 makes, and turned Pfeiffer's 14 turnovers into 25 points-off-turnovers. Brevard's bench was able to outpace that of the visitors, 25-8 as well.
The victory completes the season sweep of the Falcons, with the Tornados notching their 10
th win of the season and fifth conference victory. The win vaults Brevard into second place in the conference standings, as the Tornados sit just half a game back of Mary Baldwin (5-2 USAS) for first place in the league. Brevard visits MBU on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Staunton, Virginia.
