BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's soccer team (6-2-2, 3-0-1 USAS) defeated William Peace University (3-6-3, 0-3-1 USAS) 1-0 in a tightly contested USA South Conference match on Saturday afternoon as part of Brevard College's Homecoming festivities at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Freshman
Vitor Razera scored the game-winner on a beautifully placed header off a corner kick by senior
Ryan Lynch. It marked Razera's fourth goal in a Tornado uniform for the defender from Sao Paulo, Brazil who also led the team with four shots in the contest.
The game-winning goal came off a corner kick by Lynch who became the all-time leader at Brevard College in career assists with 18. Lynch added to his decorated record book, having already set career NCAA-era records at BC in goals (43) and points (104).
The win also marked the 450th overall collegiate win in the career of Head Coach Helio "L" D'Anna. Under the direction of Coach D'Anna, now in his sixth season at Brevard, the Tornados have won back-to-back USA South Conference championships and earned trips to the NCAA Division III national championships each of the past two seasons.
Goalkeeper
Matheus Rossi earned the shutout, registering three saves. It marked the fifth shutout of the season for the Brevard defense who has not allowed a goal in the last 256 minutes of competition dating back to a draw at Methodist on October 5.
The match was evenly played throughout with both teams enjoying impressive stints of possession in both halves. Brevard fired off five shots in the first half, compared to just three shots by the Pacers. The second half saw more offense with BC recording eight shots compared to WPU's five attempts.
In the 59th minute of the match, Brevard finally broke through with Razera's goal. The game-winner came on a corner kick, a category that BC dominated in throughout the contest with seven corners compared to just one by William Peace.
With the win, the Tornados remained undefeated in USA South Conference play through four league games. Moreover, Brevard remained undefeated at Ives-Lemel Family Field, improving their home record to 3-0-1 on the season.
Brevard will now turn its attention to a matchup vs. USA South foe North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday, October 19. Start time at Ives-Lemel Family is 11:30 a.m. for the matchup between the Tornados and Battling Bishops.
