STAUNTON, Va. – The Brevard College men's soccer team (7-3-2, 4-1-1 USA South) took care of business with a resounding 5-0 victory over host Mary Baldwin University (3-10, 2-3-1 USAS) in USA South Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the SMA Worth Field in Staunton, Virginia.
The five goals scored marked a season-high for Brevard in USA South Conference play. With one more regular-season game to play, the Tornados have won three of their last four matches.
Senior
Ryan Lynch continued his record-setting career in a Tornado uniform, scoring one goal to go along with a school-record three assists. The three assists by Lynch tied the NCAA-era record set by
Sam O'Callaghan in 2022, also against Mary Baldwin. For his career, Lynch extended his school-record totals to 44 goals, 21 assists and 109 points.
In addition to Lunch, freshmen
Emil Ramstroem (Vasteras, Sweden) and
Justin Labhart (St. Gallen, Switzerland) each scored their first goals in collegiate play, while
Lamont Young Jr. scored the first goal of his season and the second in his career. Freshman
Enrique Sosa (Asuncion, Paraguay) scored as well, his third goal of the season.
Freshman
Tom Percival-Smith (Bournemouth, England) made his first career start at goalkeeper for the Tornados, playing 70 minutes and recording his first career save. Fellow freshman
Victor Huang (Barcelona, Spain) played the final 20 minutes in goal for BC to complete the shutout.
After a scoreless opening 17 minutes of the match, Ramstroem scored the first goal of the day, off an assist by Lynch. The score remained 1-0 throughout the rest of the first half as Brevard's defense held the Fighting Squirrels to just one shot in the period.
In the second half, Lynch found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 51st minute. Labhart then scored his first career goal in the 57th minute off Lynch's second assist of the match. Less than two minutes later, Lynch matched the school record with his third assist, setting up a goal by Sosa to give BC a 4-0 lead. Young completed the day by scoring an unassisted goal in the 88th minute to cap off the decisive victory.
Brevard outshot Mary Baldwin 21-3, including a 14-2 shot advantage in the second half. The Tornados attempted six corner kicks, compared to just two by the Fighting Squirrels. A grand total of 28 players saw action for BC with 11 different players attempting shots.
Brevard will play its final match of the regular season at home on Wednesday vs. conference rival Pfeiffer. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field on the campus of Brevard College
