FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team (14-11, 6-9 USAS) swept Mary Baldwin University (2-21, 0-15 USAS) 3-0 to split its two matches played Saturday as part of a USA South Conference Tri-Match held at the Riddle Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In the first competition of the day, Brevard fell 3-0 to host Methodist University (21-4, 12-3 USAS).
Freshman
Caroline Moon led the Tornados offensively in the win over Mary Baldwin with a match-best nine kills. Senior
Makenna Parkins and junior
Jaxson Tumicki both added seven kills to aid the BC attack. Freshman setter
Izzy Boulay was the match's top distributor with 28 assists. Defensively, senior libero
Bailey Lance led all players with 13 digs and freshman
Emma Fontana recorded a match-high three blocks. Senior
Ashley Hoxit added nine digs.
The Tornados registered an impressive 11 service aces across the three sets with Lance and sophomore
Lili White leading the service assault with three aces apiece. Boulay recorded two aces, while Fontana, Hoxit and Moon each registered a service ace as well.
After winning the first two sets 25-13 and 25-16, the Tornados found themselves leading the Fighting Squirrels 18-11 in the third set. Brevard promptly put away the match with a resounding 7-0 scoring run that included six consecutive points with White serving. Ahead 24-11, the Tornados secured the victory on a match-winning kill by Fontana off an assist from Boulay.
Earlier in the day, Brevard faced off against host Methodist to begin the Tri-Match. The Monarchs, who currently lead the USA South Volleyball standings, won the match in three sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-12).
On the offensive end, Moon once again led the Tornados with seven kills to go along with 12 digs. Boulay recorded a team-high 19 assists, setting up Moon and the BC attackers. Lance registered 21 digs and Tumicki recorded four blocks to lead the way defensively for Brevard.
Methodist was led by the combination of Jeanna Fowler (13 kills) and Carlyn Tanis (10 kills). Hannah Hewett, the setter for the Monarchs, led all players with 33 assists.
Brevard will head into the final week of the USA South regular season with a match at Pfeiffer on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Misenheimer, North Carolina.
