GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (1-0) won its 2024-25 season-opener with an emphatic 60-45 road victory over host Bob Jones (0-3) on Friday night in Greenville, South Carolina.
Junior
Jada Petty-Wilkins led all scorers with 21 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field, including three made 3-pointers. Petty-Wilkins also found her way to the charity stripe ten times, converting six free throws. The 21 points was one point shy for the native of Tryon, North Carolina. Petty-Wilkins scored a career-best 22 points last season during her sophomore year vs. Salem.
Seniors
Josie Hester (9 points) and
Lexi Shepard (8 pts.), along with sophomore
Somer Johnson (8 pts.) added to BC's offensive attack. Hester scored all of her points by way of three made 3-pointers, while Johnson drained two 3-pointers as well.
Defensively, Shepard led the way by matching a career high with six steals. Graduate student
Chyna Pouncey led the Tornados on the glass with seven rebounds, including three offensive boards. Senior
Naliyah Boyce pulled down five rebounds and blocked a shot.
Petty-Wilkins sunk a 3-pointer in the opening minute to mark the first points for the Tornados in the 2024-25 season. BC went on to lead 16-14 after the first quarter before the two teams played a tight second stanza. After taking a 26-25 lead into intermission, a 14-5 scoring run gave Brevard its first double digit lead of the night.
The Tornados entered the fourth quarter with a six-point lead, then rattled of a 14-2 run that put the contest out of reach.
Brevard returns to action with its second game of the year on Tuesday vs. Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina. The home opener is set for Saturday, November 16 at 4 p.m. when the Tornados take on Guilford College at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
