FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (13-10, 8-4 USA South) completed a season sweep over Methodist University (4-18, 2-10 USAS) with a 73-66 victory at the March F. Riddle Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the BC men's basketball program secured its 13th victory of the season, which marks the most in program history since the 2010-11 campaign (13). Moreover, Brevard's eight conference wins are its most since 2014-15.
Graduate guard Quincy Carter led the way with a 24-point performance, making 10 field goals with three 3-pointers and a free throw. The outing marked Carter's fourth 20-plus point performance of the season.
Jadon Carnes, a sophomore guard from Concord, North Carolina, logged 18 points on eight field goals and two free throws, marking his 13th double-digit scoring output of 2023-24. Charlie Hester also reached double figures with 11 points, while Kavan Horton stuffed the stat sheet with six points, nine rebounds, and a career-high seven assists.
The Tornados shot the ball at a 55% clip and BC made seven three-pointers, but Methodist forced Brevard into 20 total turnovers and turned those mistakes into 22 points, keeping the Monarchs within striking distance.
Brevard opened an early 8-3 lead before the Monarchs answered to take their first lead of the contest, 15-14, at the 10:06 mark in the first half. The hosts extended this edge to a 22-14 mark, using a 9-0 run. However, Brevard punched right back after a layup from Carnes gave the Tornados the lead back, 23-22, at the 2:39 mark. The lead changed hands four more times as BC held a four-point lead, 32-28 at the intermission.
A quick 7-2 run to open up the second half gave the Tornados a 39-30 lead within two minutes. Brevard extended its edge to a game-best 12 points following a Carter 3-pointer at 13:44, before the Monarchs answered back and trimmed the deficit down to three, 57-54, with 8:44 left to play. However, the Tornados were able to outscore Methodist 16-12 down the stretch to wrap up the seven-point win, 73-66.
Methodist's Zac Sledge totaled 22 points, while Brone Brinson and Chance Minnot each added 11 to the MU scoring efforts.
Brevard will gear up for its Sunday showdown in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The winner of Sunday's contest (slated for 1 p.m. ) will be in sole possession of second place and a first-round bye in the USA South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.
