Tornados Split Road Doubleheader to Open 2024 Season

Seven Tornados Collect Multiple Hits on the Day

DECATUR, Ga. – The Brevard College softball team (1-1) split its season-opening doubleheader at Agnes Scott College on Saturday in Decatur, Georgia.  Agnes Scott won the opening game 11-6 before Brevard earned its first win of the year with an 8-3 victory in game two.

GAME ONE: AGNES SCOTT 11, BREVARD 6

Brevard opened the season with a leadoff double by center fielder Karley Queen who advanced to third on the play via a throwing error.  Queen then scored with the first run of the season for the Tornados as Jadyn Harlow drove home Queen with a single down the left-field line.  It marked the first career hit and RBI for Harlow, a freshman third baseman from Halifax, Virginia.

After Agnes Scott built a 6-1 lead with a six-run second inning, BC chipped away with a bases-loaded, RBI walk drawn by senior catcher Olivia Martinez.

In the top of the fourth, Brevard cut the lead to two runs with the first career home run for Harlow, a three-run shot that scored MacKenzie Wilborne and Queen.

The Scotties answered however with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to ensure the victory.

Harlow went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Queen, Wilborne and Jones all recorded two-hit performances.

Junior Grace Reynolds (0-1) started in the circle for the Tornados and went 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.  Freshman Logan Masinsky made her collegiate debut with 1.2 innings of relief for BC.  Regan Hutto of Agnes Scott earned the win, allowing no earned runs in 3.2 innings.

GAME TWO: BREVARD 8, AGNES SCOT 3

Brevard answered in game two, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead.  Queen drew a leadoff walk to begin the game, then stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wilborne.  First baseman Regan Winkler then drove in Queen with an RBI-single for the early advantage.

A sacrifice fly by Rylee Locklear drove home Wilborne to make the score 2-0 in the third inning.  Queen hit an RBI-double to score Michaela Jones to extend the lead to 3-0 in the fourth.  For the two freshmen, it marked the first career RBI for Locklear and the first career run scored for Jones.

Agnes Scott cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth, but Brevard responded with a big four-run top of the sixth highlighted by a two-RBI single by Winkler.

Ahead 7-2, Brevard added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Queen hit an RBI single to score junior shortstop Gabby Hooper.

Winkler went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Queen went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base to lead BC offensively in the game two win.

Abby Delp (1-0) went the full seven innings to earn the complete-game win.  Delp allowed just three runs on eight hits while striking out four in the winning effort.

The Tornados will return to action with a doubleheader Sunday at Middle Georgia State in Cochran, Georgia.  First pitch of game one of the twin bill is scheduled for 11 a.m.  The home opener for Brevard is set for Saturday, February 24 vs. Wesleyan at the BC Softball Field.
