BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (17-8) defeated Greensboro College (7-19) by a final of 60-46 in the first round of the 2024 USA South Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
With the victory, the Tornados advance to the Semifinals for the second consecutive season. Brevard will travel to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on number-one seed Southern Virginia University on Thursday. The win also set a new NCAA-era single-season mark for the most victories for the BC women's basketball program, surpassing last season's mark of 16 victories.
BC led wire to wire in Tuesday's first round contest, holding the Pride to just 15 points in the first half of play.
Josie Hester (15 points) and Jada Perry-Wilkins (14 points) each scored in double figures for Brevard and hit multiple 3-pointers each. Hester grabbed eight board, dished out four assists, and notched three steals as well, while Petty-Wilkins racked up a game-high four steals.
Makayla Street added nine points, while
Naliyah Boyce matched a career-high with 11 rebounds.
Greensboro's Azuria Barrino led the way for the Pride with 17 points and nine rebounds. Samiah Mitchell added eight boards as both sides battled on the glass neck and neck, 44-42 in favor of the Tornados.
BC scored 17 points off turnovers, racked up 12 steals and five blocked shots, and Brevard's bench contributed 20 total points to the winning effort. The Tornados led by as many as 22 points midway through the fourth quarter. Despite a low-percentage night for both squads from the field, the Tornados managed to knock in 10 3-point baskets, marking the fifth time this season that Brevard has knocked in double-digit 3-pointers.
Brevard will face Southern Virginia on Thursday at 6 p.m. with a trip to the USA South Championship on the line.
