BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (4-4) split a home doubleheader against Oberlin College (1-1) on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.
Â
The Tornados scored three runs in their final two innings at bat in game number two to salvage the doubleheader sweep, 4-3, after the Yeomen took the scheduled seven-inning game one by a final of 6-2.
Â
GAME ONE: OBERLIN 6, BREVARD 2
Â
Oberlin jumped on BC early in the first game of the twin bill, as the visitors scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning after a pair of doubles and an RBI single. After stranding the bases loaded in the bottom of the first frame, BC broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the second when
Kenny Pridmore led off the inning with a single that was followed by a
CP Pyle RBI double that cut the deficit to a 2-1 margin. Brevard got a runner to third in the bottom of the third with one out following a
Frankie Vasquez triple, but a 6-3-2 double play erased the threat.
Â
The Tornados stranded a pair in the bottom of the fourth, and Oberlin made BC pay with a run in the top of the fifth that was followed up by a three-run top of the sixth inning. Pridmore, who scored BC's first run of the contest, drove in
Lucas Granata with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Yeomen escaped any further damage and wrapped up the win in the bottom of the seventh to open their 2024 campaign with a 6-2 win over Brevard.
Â
Pridmore led all Tornados with two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Pridmore, Pyle, and Vasquez all collected extra-base knocks, while Conor Crosby (1-2) lasted five innings allowing five hits and three runs with five strikeouts.
Â
GAME TWO: BREVARD 4, OBERLIN 3
Â
The Tornados were able to respond in the second game and used timely hitting and baserunning to snatch the back end of the doubleheader. After Oberlin scored two runs in the top of the first for the second-consecutive contest, BC's Granata led things off with a solo home run over the left field fence that brought Brevard back within a run, 2-1, after one inning played.
Â
Each side went scoreless until the top of the fifth when Brady Groves drove in a run with an RBI double to push the Yeomen lead up to a 3-1 margin.
Â
BC's
Logan Sawyer came across in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch. A walk drawn by
Cale Oehler also caused
Logan Clark to come around to score, as ball four was a wild pitch and tied the matchup at 3-3.
Â
After a leadoff strikeout,
Hayden Jennings reached on a walk with one out in the bottom of the eighth and was pinch ran for by graduate outfielder
Joc Pledger. Pledger then proceeded to get himself into scoring position on a Vasquez fly out to right field. Sawyer then blooped a single into shallow left field and brought Pledger around to score, giving Brevard the late one-run lead.
Â
Ethan Coleman came on in relief of
Kalen Milstead (1-0), who backed up
Cameron Cook's start with four innings of scoreless baseball to earn his first collegiate victory. Coleman worked around a one-out error and a stolen base to shut the door on game two and earn his first collegiate save.
Â
Six different Tornados collected hits in game two with Sawyer leading the way with a pair of singles. Brevard stole four bases as well, as
Luke Morton notched a pair of stolen bags.
Â
Brevard and Oberlin wrap up the three-game set tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Gil Coan Field.
