Baseball Shuts Down Oberlin to Take Series on Sunday

Altschuler and Fahringer Dominate on the Mound, Vasquez Goes 3-for-3 at the Dish

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (5-4) held Oberlin College's (1-2) offense in check en route to a 4-1 getaway day victory on Sunday at Gil Coan Field.

BC held the visitors to just one run on seven hits, while Brevard's pitching and defense left seven Yeomen stranded on base. Brevard held a 1-0 lead through the first five innings and added all the insurance that it needed with a two-run sixth followed by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Blake Altschuler (2-1) earned his second win of the season, working six and 1/3 innings allowing just one lone run on six hits with five strikeouts. Sophomore Andy Fahringer closed the door with two and 2/3 innings of scoreless ball to earn his first career save.

Junior third baseman Frankie Vasquez led the Tornados at the dish with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with three singles, two runs scored, and a career-high three stolen bases. Kenny Pridmore and Logan Sawyer each collected a pair of hits each, and Cale Oehler drove in a pair of runs while Logan Clark and CP Pyle each stole bases.

Brevard struck first in the rubber match when Baylor Wyatt roped an RBI single into right field that brought Vasquez around to score in the bottom of the second inning. Neither side scored until the bottom of the sixth when BC struck twice on an Oehler RBI groundout and Pyle's RBI single, as the Tornados took control with a 3-0 lead through six innings played.

Altschuler, who cruised through the first six frames, was touched for a run following back-to-back singles and a one-out walk. Fahringer ended the threat, however, after coming in and forcing consecutive fly outs by the Yeomen.

Oehler notched his second RBI of the contest in the bottom of the seventh to extend BC's lead to a 4-1 margin. Fahringer erased a two-out walk in the top of the eighth with a pickoff, and retired Oberlin 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to give BC its second series win of the 2024 season.

Brevard is back in action next weekend when the Tornados travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to face Guilford College in a three-game series that kicks off with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 2 at 12 p.m.
