BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (11-10, 6-4 USA South) defeated Southern Virginia University (5-16, 2-8 USAS) 77-66 on Saturday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
BC took a three-point lead into the halftime break and then utilized a lengthy scoring run in the second half coupled with shutdown defense to clinch the critical USA South Conference victory. The Tornados currently sit in a tie for second place in the conference with four games left to play in the regular season, including a pivotal three-game road trip next week.
Sophomore forward Jadon Carnes led the way with 19 points on the offensive side, hitting eight field goals and three 3-pointers, while graduate guard Quincy Carter scored 12 points and dished a team-high six assists out. Kavan Horton continued his good work on the glass, matching Jeremy Posner's seven rebounds for the team lead. The Asheville, North Carolina native scored nine points and distributed four assists. Carson Evans totaled two steals, while Sly White added two blocks defensively.
The contest was back and forth through the first half before Brevard established its lead in the second period, with the lead changing hands seven times with five lead changes. BC dominated the paint with 42 points, turned 15 SVU turnovers into 18 points, and scored 17 points in transition.
Following the tight first half, BC used an 11-2 scoring run over the span of five minutes to open up an 11 point lead, 58-47. Brevard got the advantage up to 14 points, remaining up by double digits over most of the last nine minutes of play and finished off the 77-66 triumph.
Koa Baker scored a game-best 22 points with eight rebounds, while DJ Green added 18 points for the Knights. Despite the loss, SVU held a 35-26 edge on the boards.
The Tornados kick off next week's three-game road trip on Tuesday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m. when BC takes on Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
