GREENSBORO, N.C. - After drawing a foul on the final shot attempt of the game, graduate guard Quincy Carter hit three free throws to give the Brevard College men's basketball team (12-10, 7-4 USA South) a 67-66 victory on the road at Greensboro College (10-12, 6-5 USAS) on Tuesday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Brevard fell behind by seven points, 64-57, with just over a minute left to play. Kavan Horton hit a jumper in the paint to trim the deficit to five points, 64-59, and the ensuing foul sent the Pride to the free throw line for a one-and-one opportunity. Greensboro failed to capitalize, missing the free throw while Brevard's Carter hit a 3-pointer on the other end to cut the Pride lead to two points, 64-62, with 33 seconds left to play.
Jeremy Posner forced a GC turnover, and Carter was fouled at the 19 second mark and hit both of this free throw to tie things back up, 64-64. However, in the final seconds of regulation, GC's Matthew Brown hit a jumper to give the hosts a two-point lead, 66-64.
With just 0.7 seconds left following the made bucket by GC, Horton launched a three-quarter court pass to Carter, who caught it cleanly and attempted a shot. GC's Javion Majette was called for a foul on the 3-point attempt, and the veteran guard from Decatur, Georgia nailed all three attempts at the stripe to flip the script and hand Brevard the crucial victory.
Carter racked up 16 points with two made 3-pointers and a 6-for-7 mark from the free throw line, while Jadon Carnes matched him with 16 points, two 3's, and 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Kavan Horton added eight points, five assists, and four rebounds, while Charles Reed and Chancey Watson led the production from the second unit with six points apiece.
Both sides shot nearly identical from the field, but BC hit seven 3-pointers compared to three from the hosts. The highly-competitive matchup featured a grand total of 17 lead changes in addition to seven tied scores throughout the USA South battle.
Brevard held a three-point cushion, 26-23, following the first half, as the Tornado defense held Greensboro to 26% shooting in the first half while also pressuring the Pride into 15 turnovers total in the game, which led to 18 crucial points-off-turnovers for the Tornados.
GC edged Brevard 36-30 on points in the paint, but BC's bench outperformed Greensboro's by a wide 22-4 margin. Four Pride players ended the contest with double figure scoring totals, led by Isaiah Pruett's 19-point performance. Grant Thompson scored eight points but led all players with 11 rebounds, serving as the catalyst for Greensboro's 39-21 edge on the glass in the contest.
The last-second victory pays significant dividends for the Tornados in the USA South standings, as Brevard remains in a tie for second with NC Wesleyan - who the Tornados match up with on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Rocky Mount, North Carolina following Saturday's 2 p.m. tip in Fayetteville, North Carolina vs. Methodist University.
