Tornados Earn Vital Road Win at Meredith

Josie Hester Leads the Way with 20 Points, Six 3-Pointers

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (14-6, 9-5 USAS) earned a vital USA South Conference victory over host Meredith College (7-15, 5-10 USAS) 59-46 on Saturday afternoon at the Weatherspoon Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Junior guard Josie Hester registered a career-best performance in a Tornado uniform with 20 points, including a career-high six made 3-pointers on eight attempts.  The native of Huntersville, North Carolina added four rebounds, three steals and two assists in her team-high 30 minutes of play off the bench.

Sophomore Makayla Street scored nine points and came up with three steals on the defensive end.  Junior point guard Lexi Shepard dished out four assists and pulled down six rebounds.  Junior center Naliyah Boyce grabbed six boards, blocked two shots and added six points.

Meredith was led by De'Ja Morgan and Paris Bethea, the only Avenging Angels to score in double figures.  Meredith's Rylie Wade recorded 15 rebounds to lead all players.

The two teams traded the lead several times early with Meredith taking a 9-7 lead with 2:51 to play in the first quarter.  Hester then delivered on her first 3-pointer of the day to spark a 10-1 scoring run and give BC a 17-10 lead at the end of the first.
Meredith answered by outscoring Brevard 16-12 in the second quarter as the Tornados took a 29-26 lead into the halftime break.

The Tornados opened the third quarter on 11-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer by Jada Petty-Wilkins to stretch the lead to 40-30.  After a 3-pointer from Christena Rhone, the margin remained 10 points heading into the fourth quarter.

Meredith answered again, cutting BC's lead to 49-44 with 3:40 to play in the contest.  The Tornados responded however with several made free throws and two more 3-pointers down the stretch by Hester to secure the road win.

The defensive battle saw Brevard hold Meredith to 31% shooting from the field and 2-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.  The Avenging Angels committed a whopping 28 turnovers resulting in 25 points for BC.

Brevard will return to action on Tuesday evening with a USA South Conference contest at Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina.  The next home contest for BC is set for Saturday, February 10 vs. Methodist with tip-off set for 2 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
