Montreat Takes Season Opener 12-8 on Thursday

Parker Corbett Sets a BC Career-High with Five Goals, Six Points

MONTREAT, N.C. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (0-1) scored seven goals in the second half, but its comeback attempt came up short in a 12-8 defeat to Montreat College (1-0) on Thursday evening in nearby Montreat, North Carolina. 
 
Graduate attacker Parker Corbett scored a BC career-high five goals and added an assist for a BC-high six points. The effort matched his overall collegiate career-high of single-game goals he set at Averett University. 
 
Senior Atticus Cooper scored twice with an assist, while Drew Pond (one goal, one assist) and Gage Khayat (one assist) also contributed to BC's offense. 
 
Scott Bundy got the start in goal for the Tornados, matching his career-high with 13 saves while also scooping a team-high six ground balls. Cooper and Michael Peters each caused two turnovers as well for Brevard's defense. 
 
Jay Chance scored a game-best four goals for the Cavs, while Connor Walsh (three goals, two assists) and Eli King (three goals, one assist) also had multiple-point efforts in the win for Montreat. Josh Espinosa made seven saves, while Ernie Del Sol snatched nine ground balls. 
 
Following nine minutes of scoreless play, Montreat's Chance scored the first goal of the season for the Cavaliers. This sparked a 4-0 run for the hosts, who scored their final goal of the first period in the final seconds of the stanza. 
 
BC and Montreat traded goals in the second quarter, when Corbett found the back of the net at the 12:34 mark. Nine minutes elapsed yet again before Montreat broke a scoreless streak at 3:12 when King scored his first goal of the evening, as the contest went to the break 5-1 in favor of the hosts. 
 
Montreat outpaced Brevard 4-2 in the third quarter of play, while the Tornados maintained a 5-3 edge in the fourth period that included five out of the last six goals scored, but the Cavaliers prevailed with the four-goal win. 
 
Montreat outshot Brevard 49-28, while the hosts held a 44-26 edge in ground balls. 
 
Brevard is back in action next Wednesday, February 14 for a 7 p.m. start time in Banner Elk, North Carolina against Lees-McRae College.
