NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Brevard College softball team (4-9) continued its run at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Wednesday, facing The College of New Jersey and Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham. Brevard fell to TCNJ by run rule, 11-0 in five innings before a 9-3 loss to FDU Florham.
GAME ONE: TCNJ 11, BREVARD 0 (5 INNINGS)
The Lions got going early with a triple, RBI double, and RBI single to take the early lead, 2-0. TCNJ led off the third with a leadoff single and an RBI double to extend its advantage to a 3-0 margin before using a two-RBI triple in the top of the third that gave the Lions a 5-0 edge.
TCNJ was able to break the game open with a four-run fourth inning and added two more runs in the top of the fifth while maintaining its shutout for the 11-0 victory by run rule.
Brevard was held to just two hits in the contest, with Gabby Hopper and
Peyton Wise recording singles. Hooper also stole a base for the Tornados, while
Grace Reynolds (1-5) and
Logan Masinsky worked in the circle for BC.
TCNJ was led by a 3-for-3 performance by McKayla Yard, who scored three of the Lions' 11 runs. Maya Knasiak and Morgan Estelow each added two RBI each, while Julia Roessler pitched a complete game shutout in the circle allowing just two hits with three strikeouts.
GAME TWO: FDU FLORHAM 9, BREVARD 3
After surrendering one run in each of the first two innings, Brevard got on the board in the bottom of the second as
Olivia Martinez reached on a fielding error to lead off the frame, and
Rylee Locklear hit an RBI triple. Locklear would end up being stranded on third however, as the Knights answered back with one run in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
Locklear set up yet another scoring opportunity for the Tornados, as a leadoff Martinez walked in the bottom of the fourth was followed up by a Locklear double, placing runners on second and third with nobody out.
KateLynn Olive drove in Martinez on a shallow sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to one run, 3-2. The threat was halted following a foul out and strike out by the Tornados, leaving the Knights up by a run through four innings played.
After Reynolds, who was brought on in relief of
Abby Delp in the top of the fourth inning, sat down the Knights 1-2-3 in the top half of the fifth,
MacKenzie Wilborne kickstarted a Tornado rally with a one-out single and a stolen base. Winkler capitalized on the opportunity, lofting a single to right-center field that scored Wilborne and tied the game up, 3-3 through five innings played.
FDU Florham was able to break the game open in a big way in the top of the sixth inning, striking for six runs with an RBI single and three RBI doubles, including two that drove in multiple runs. The Knights held Brevard scoreless in the final two frames to clinch the six-run victory.
Wilborne finished the contest 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Locklear went 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI.
Action concludes at the beach for the Tornados on Thursday where Brevard will take on Thiel College at 9 a.m. before facing the University of Maine-Farmington at 1 p.m.
