Tornados Battle With Southern Virginia

Brevard Falls Narrowly in Game Two, Returns Home to Face Montreat on Monday

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College softball team (6-15, 0-4 USAS) fell in both games of a doubleheader against visiting Southern Virginia University (6-14, 2-2 USAS) in USA  South Conference on Saturday afternoon at the BC Softball Field.  Southern Virginia won the first game 10-2 in five innings, then the two teams battled in a tight affair in game two before the Knights came away with a 3-1 win

GAME ONE: SOUTHERN VIRGINIA 10, BREVARD 2 (5 INNINGS)

Brevard took the early lead with a run in the first inning, before SVU answered with a run in the second and three in the third.  The Knights would then go on to score three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to secure the run-rule victory.

Lead-off hitter Karley Queen led BC offensively with a 2-for-3 day that included a triple and two runs scored.  In addition to Queen, MacKenzie Wilborne, Ive Leighton, Regan Winkler and Gabby Hooper all recorded hits for the Tornados.

Freshman Logan Masinsky (1-3) started in the circle and went 4.2 innings, allowing six earned runs and striking out two.  BC's Grace Reynolds struck out the only batter she faced for the final out of the fifth inning in relief of Masinsky.  Ariana Hall (2-3) earned the win for SVU, allowing one earned run and six hits in five innings

Four of BC's 10 runs allowed were unearned as the Knights capitalized on two BC errors.  Southern Virginia committed three errors in the contest.

BC's first run came in the bottom of the first after Queen opened the game with a single.  The very next at bat, Wilborne singled to center which allowed Queen to advance and ultimately score on an error in the SVU outfield.

The second run for the Tornados came in the third on an RBI ground-out by Jadyn Harow that scored Queen.

GAME TWO: SOUTHERN VIRGINIA 3, BREVARD 1

Game two proved to be a pitchers' duel between BC starter Abby Delp and a total of three SVU pitchers who saw action.

After a scoreless first inning, SVU took the lead with a run in the second.  Delp then shut down the Knights over the next four consecutive frames.

Brevard found the equalizing run in the bottom of the sixth.  Wilborne led off the inning with a walk, then advanced to second on a ground-out by Queen and to third on a stolen base.  Leighton then drove a ball to the outfield for an RBI-single to score Wilborne and tie the game 1-1.

SVU answered however with a two-run double by Chloe Nelson in the top of the seventh to regain the lead 3-1 heading into to the final stanza.  BC's Rylee Locklear reached base on a hit-by-pitch, yet the Tornados were unable to capitalize and the Knights came away with the win.

Delp went the complete seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out two.  Delp's outing included a stretch of nine consecutive batters retired and two 1-2-3 innings.

Malia Davis started for SVU and pitched five shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two and walking one.  In relief of Davis, Emmaline DeGroot (1-2) was the winning pitcher for the Knights with Arianna Hall earning the save.

The Tornados will return to action on Monday with a non-conference doubleheader vs. local rival Montreat College.  First pitch of the conference doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the BC Softball Field.
