Cavs Take Two from Nados on Monday

BC Drops Doubleheader, Returns to Conference Play on Saturday in Fayetteville

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College softball team (6-17) concluded a six-game homestand with a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, falling in a pair of non-conference contests to Montreat College (25-7) at the BC Softball Field.

The visiting Cavaliers earned an 8-0 run-rule win in five innings in game one, and scored eight unanswered runs en route to a 10-3 victory in the second game of the Monday afternoon matinee.

GAME ONE: MONTREAT 8, BREVARD 0 (5 INNINGS)

The Cavaliers led things off in the first game with a solo home run to left field in the top of the first, followed immediately by a four-run second inning. BC held the Cavaliers scoreless in the third, but the visitors tacked on three in the fourth to get to the eight-run threshold.

BC was held to just two hits through the first four innings – a MacKenzie Wilborne first-inning double and a Jadyn Harlow fourth-inning single – but put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth with three-straight singles by Gabby Hooper, Karley Queen, and Wilborne. The rally was halted with a ground out that ended the contest in favor of Montreat, 8-0.

Grace Reynolds (1-9) was the starter in game one for Brevard, working three innings with five hits and four runs allowed. Logan Masinsky worked two innings, surrendering nine hits and four runs while recording a pair of strikeouts.

Montreat was paced by Amayia Hernandez, who went 3-for-3 at the dish with three runs scored, two RBI, and a solo home run. Makayla Reid also went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Dayton Kell went 2-for-2.

GAME TWO: MONTREAT 10, BREVARD 3

Wilborne carried over her strong performance from game one at the dish, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Ive Leighton, Olivia Martinez, KateLynn Olive, and Queen all recorded singles, while Rylee Locklear scored a run and Regan Winkler notched an RBI.

Montreat plated 10 runs on 10 hits alongside three Tornado errors in game two. Kell logged another two-hit performance with a run scored and two RBI, while Sage Dowis and Haley Fethke also had multiple hits in the contest.

Abby Delp (4-5) was handed the ball in the second game of the doubleheader, lasting five innings with six hits and five runs allowed alongside a strikeout. Reynolds worked her second game of the afternoon, going two innings giving up four hits and three earned runs with a strikeout.

BC got going early with two runs in the bottom of the first, as Winkler drove in Locklear on an RBI fielder's choice. Wilborne stepped in and roped a single up the middle that brought Queen around to score, as the Tornados built an early two-run cushion.

Montreat found its answer in the top of the third, using a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to tie things up at 2-2. Brevard loaded the bases once again, and Leighton drew a walk that allowed Martinez to score and gave the hosts a 3-2 edge.

The Cavs tied the game back up on Kell's solo home run in the top of the fourth inning down the left field line, and retook the lead 5-3 after an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth. Two unearned runs for Montreat in the top of the sixth were followed by three insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as the Tornados were unable to find an answer offensively in the 10-3 defeat.

The Tornados will look to halt their slide on Saturday as Brevard visits Fayetteville, North Carolina to take on Methodist University in a USA South Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
