FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (6-19, 0-6 USAS) dropped a pair of games to host Methodist University (15-11, 5-3 USAS) in a USA South Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Despite a late Brevard rally, the Monarchs won the first game 6-4. Methodist then took game two 8-0 in five innings.
GAME ONE: METHODIST 6, BREVARD 4
The Tornados struck first in the opening game with a run in the top of the second. Outfielder Ivy Leighton drew a walk, then advanced to third on a double by catcher
Olivia Martinez. Leighton then proved opportunistic on the basepaths, scoring on a wild pitch.
Methodist answered with two runs in the bottom of the second and four in the third to build a 6-1 lead. Both teams were scoreless from the fourth through the sixth innings until BC's offense came alive in the seventh.
The Tornados opened the frame with three straight hits as
Rylee Locklear,
Karley Queen and
MacKenzie Wilborne all singled to load the bases.
Regan Winkler delivered with a sacrifice fly to score Locklear followed by a 2-RBI double by
Peyton Wise to plate Queen and Wilborne. Leighton singled with two outs, however the Monarchs threw out Wise at home plate to clinch the victory and end the BC rally.
Brevard recorded ten hits, coming from six different Tornados. Queen, Wilborne, Wise and Martinez each registered two hits apiece.
Grace Reynolds started in the circle and pitched a complete six innings for the Tornados. Kiersten Margoupis (10-2) was the winning pitcher for Methodist, striking out six batters across seven innings.
GAME TWO: METHODIST 8, BREVARD 0 (5 INNINGS)
Methodist jumped ahead early with four runs in the first inning. The Monarchs followed with one run in each of the next four innings to build the eight-run lead and clinch the run-run victory in five innings.
Alyssa Barwick (4-6) was the winning pitcher after pitching five shutout innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Logan Masinsky was the starting pitcher for the Tornados and faced 28 batters.
Locklear went 2-for-3 to lead the Tornados offensively. Leighton managed BC's other hit in the contest. Martinez added a stolen base after reaching base on a Monarch error.
Brevard returns to action with another road USA South Conference doubleheader at William Peace on Saturday, April 13 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
