Late Rally Falls Short for Tornados in Back and Forth Game One

Colson Miller Launches Two Solo Homers

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (16-11, 9-4 USA South) went back and forth with Greensboro College (19-10, 7-6 USAS), but ultimately narrowly fell in game one of a three-game set, 7-6, on Saturday evening in High Point, North Carolina.

Colson Miller slugged a pair of solo home runs, and scored three of BC's seven total runs in the game. Lucas Granata, Luke Morton, Caleb Oehler, CP Pyle, Logan Sawyer, and Frankie Vasquez all collected hits, with Granata, Pyle, and Vasquez driving in runs.

Jacob Thompson pitched six innings for Brevard, striking out three batters while allowing five runs on nine hits. Cesar Rodriguez pitched the final two frames for Brevard.

The Tornados kicked things off in the top of the first with a Granata walk, followed by a single from Morton. Clark drew another walk to load the bases up with nobody out, and Vasquez drove in Granata with a sacrifice fly to give Brevard the early 1-0 lead. The Pride answered in the bottom of the first with a double and a runner reaching on an error with one out, but consecutive fly outs ended the threat.

Colson Miller launched his second home run in as many games in the top of the second, as his solo shot put Brevard up 2-0. Greensboro utilized small ball to strike for a three-run frame in the bottom of the second, while BC answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third to retake the lead, 4-3.

The contest swung back in the favor of the hosts, as Greensboro used a solo homer from Evan Sykes in the bottom of the fourth and a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead, 6-4, through five innings played.

After Miller was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the sixth and advanced to third base on a single, Granata drove him in to trim the Pride lead in half, 6-5, midway through the sixth. Thompson sat Greensboro down in the bottom of the sixth inning in spite of a two-out error.

Brevard threatened to jump on the Greensboro bullpen in the top of the second, as Caleb Oehler walked and Vasquez reached on an error, but a foul out and a fielder's choice ended the seventh-inning threat.

Miller launched his second home run of the day in the top of the eighth to pull BC back within one run, and Rodriguez shut the hosts down in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the game to the ninth with Brevard down just a run, 7-6.

Oehler drew a leadoff walk followed by a Vasquez single. Hayden Jennings was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out, but Greensboro struck out BC's next two batters to clinch the win.

BC and Greensboro will battle in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday in High Point.
