SVU Pulls Away in Fourth Quarter to Down Brevard

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Arianna Casertano, Emily Denaga, and Paige Kneubuhler all scored two goals apiece, but the Brevard College women's lacrosse team (8-7, 5-3 USA South) fell 21-7 as Southern Virginia University (7-7, 5-3 USAS) pulled away in the second half on Saturday Morning at Knight Stadium in Buena Vista, Virginia.

Casertano, Denaga, Kneubuhler, and Kelsey Hamrick accounted for BC's seven goals in the contest, with Xan Hill adding an assist. The Tornados were a perfect 4-for-4 on free-position attempts in the game.

On the defensive end, Kneubuhler caused a team-high four turnovers and Hamrick added three ground balls. Kyla Smith-Fondall saved 15 shots, marking the third time this season that she has recorded double-digit saves.

Piper Searle led all goalscorers with seven goals and an assist for eight points. Kiah Baisden added three goals and three assists for six points, while Kenxie Poulsen scored three goals and distributed an assist. Reagan Bullock also notched a hat trick of three goals in the contest.

The Knights held a commanding 48-11 shooting advantage, but BC was 7-for-7 on shots-on-goal as all seven of Brevard's attempts on-frame resulted in goals with the Knights unable to record a save. SVU held BC to a 13-for-23 margin on clear attempts, and controlled the draw with 17 of 22 wins.

SVU opened the game up on a 4-0 run before Casertano found the back of the net at the 5:04 mark in the first quarter. The Knights extended their lead up to a 9-1 margin at the 5:03 stamp in the second period, but back-to-back Denaga goals pulled Brevard within six at the intermission, 9-3.

Each side traded two scores each to begin the third quarter, with Brevard finding itself down seven with one quarter to play as SVU narrowly edged the Tornados in third quarter scoring, 4-3. The Knights pulled away in the fourth period, outpacing Brevard 8-1 en route to the 21-7 win.

The Tornados close out the regular season on Saturday, April 27 at 12 p.m., hosting Methodist University at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
