BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (4-2) won a five-set thriller over visiting Bob Jones University (4-6) on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium. The win marked the first-ever victory for Brevard over the Bob Jones in the eight all-time meetings between the two schools.
The Tornados and Bruins went back-and-forth in dramatic fashion through the first four sets leading up to the decisive fifth set. Tied 14-14 in the final set,
Jaxson Tumicki and
Makenna Parkins delivered back-to-back kills off assists from
Izzy Boulay and
Bailey Lance to take the fifth set 16-14 and claim match victory.
Boulay, a freshman from Newnan, Georgia, recorded a career-high 42 assists to go along with five service aces. Parkins led all players with 18 kills, while Lance came up big on the defensive end with a team-high 25 digs.
Senior
Ashley Hoxit registered 20 digs and six kills. The Tornados also benefited from impressive offensive production by Tumicki and freshman
Casey Wampler, who each delivered eight kills.
Led by Boulay, Brevard came through with a season-high 15 service aces as a team Fellow freshman
Emma Fontana matched a career-high with four aces, while Hoxit (3), Lance (2) and
Kylie Katcher (1) all served aces as well.
To start the match, BC jumped out to a 5-0 lead and later led 16-10 in the first set. The Bruins reeled off six consecutive points to tie the set 16-16. Later tied 19-19, Brevard came through with critical points down the stretch culminating with a set winner from Parkins via an assist from Boulay.
Bob Jones answered with a 25-19 win in the second set that was followed by an authoritative 25-17 victory by the Tornados in set three to give BC a 2-1 lead. The Bruins answered again with a 25-22 win in the fourth to pave the way for the fifth and final stanza.
The thrilling fifth set featured nine tied scores and several lead changes culminating with the 16-14 win for the Tornados. It marked the second five-set victory for Brevard through six matches this season as BC improved to 2-0 at home on the year.
The Tornados next will travel to Greenville, South Carolina to play four matches this weekend as part of the Bob Jones Tournament. Friday's action includes a rematch with the Bruins on Bob Jones' home floor following a match up with Lancaster Bible.
