Howell’s Goal Gives Tornados Road Draw at Piedmont

BC Equalizes Late to Take Tie in Demorest

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (3-0-1) drew 1-1 with Piedmont University (1-1-2) on Wednesday night at the Walker Athletic Complex in Demorest, Georgia.

Brennan Howell, a freshman forward from Youngsville, North Carolina, struck in the 77th minute to level the contest at 1-1 and keep the Tornados unbeaten. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Nunez (1-0-1) got the start for BC and made three saves.

Piedmont's lone goal came in the 53rd minute via a score from Sierra Judson, who was assisted by Addi Banks and Christina Sierra. Piedmont keeper Haylee Dornan stopped a total of 10 BC shots. The Lions went deep into their bench in the contest, using a total of 24 players throughout the 90 minutes of play.

Brevard more than doubled Piedmont's shot total 24-11, with an 11-4 margin on shots-on-target. BC took six corners to PU's three as well.

The Tornados applied pressure to the Piedmont defense through the first 10 minutes, taking three shot attempts and creating chances in the attacking third. Brevard then won a pair of corner kicks, and a pair of shot attempts by Mozley found the frame but were turned away by Piedmont keeper Dornan.

In the 26th minute, Mikayla Zvekan took the ball down the left side and fired a shot that narrowly missed breaking the stalemate, as it knocked off the left post and went out for a Piedmont goal kick. BC attempted two more shot attempts that were blocked before the two sides went to the intermission deadlocked at 0-0.

Brevard held an 8-3 shot edge at the break, and the Tornados took two corner kicks to Piedmont's one.

The hosts were able to break up the deadlock in the 53rd minute as Judson scored off assists from Banks and Sierra. The strike marked BC's first goal conceded in 2024 after over 320 minutes without giving up a strike.

After creating several chances throughout the second half, Howell found the back of the net for Brevard in the 77th minute as she evaded two Lion defenders and ripped a shot past the Piedmont GK into the top part of the goal from distance.

Brevard searched for a winner late, with Olivia Guillermo, Kiara Porcelli, and Nunez all taking shots that were stopped by Dornan within the final 10 minutes of play, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

BC is back in action next week as the Tornados hit the road once again to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to face Carolina University on Wednesday, September 18 at 7 p.m. USA South Conference play opens for Brevard next Saturday, September 21 at Meredith.
