BREVARD, N.C. – Ryan Lynch scored twice to reach the 40-goal mark for his career as the Brevard College men's soccer team (2-2-1) cruised to a 4-0 victory over Maryville College (2-3-2) on a rainy Tuesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Lynch, a fifth-year senior from Charlotte, North Carolina who holds the program records for goals (40) and points (95), assisted on the game's first goal and then scored two-consecutive strikes. The two-goal effort marked the ninth time that Lynch has recorded multiple goals in a single game, and the reigning USA South Player of the Week led all Tornados with a season-high seven shot attempts.
Jerick Moreno and
Enrique Sosa notched their first collegiate goals, while
Luis Portillo,
Emil Ramstroem, and
Santiago Romero all recorded assists.
Matheus Rossi (2-2-1) made two saves for Brevard and recorded a shutout.
With the victory, the Tornados have now won four out of their last five matches against their former USA South foe Maryville.
Brevard had a 22-16 lead in shots, with a 9-2 margin with shots that found frame. Each team took five corner kicks apiece. Craig McIlwraith took a team-high five attempts for the Scots, while Christian Alcaraz made five saves in goal.
The Tornados created a pair of opportunities within the first 10 minutes via Lynch, as a right-footed curler just missed the top-right corner of the goal off the bar. Ramstrom played a ball from his center-back position over the entire Maryville defense, but Lynch's one-timer missed just high.
Brevard broke onto the score sheet in the 13
th minute of play as Lynch took the ball on the left side, cut back and crossed to the near post, where Sosa was there to meet the ball with a header that beat the Maryville keeper and gave BC the early edge 1-0.
The Tornados were able to double their lead when Ramstroem played a long ball over the top of the Scot defense to Portillo, who then crossed deep into the penalty box where Lynch met the ball with his right foot and scored in the 27
th minute to make it 2-0 ahead of halftime. Maryville attempted to get a goal back, pressing up through the remainder of the first half, but BC's defense denied the visitors to hold their two-goal cushion.
BC held a 9-8 shot advantage at the break, while each side had taken four corner kicks in the first half.
Following 30 minutes of scoreless soccer, Lynch found the back of the net for the second time after a free kick that allowed the Tornado record holder to rip a free kick from the right side of the box and tuck it into the left side of the nylon, as Brevard held a commanding 3-0 lead with 13 minutes left to play.
After a flurry of substitutions for the Tornados, Romero forced a Scot save in the 86
th minute, and Moreno capitalized and finished the rebound for his first goal as a collegiate student-athlete, closing out BC's 4-0 triumph.
The Tornados are back at home on Sunday as Brevard takes on another former conference opponent Berea College, with kickoff slated for 2 p.m.
