Four First-Half Goals Carry Brevard to Win Over Berea

Shutout Victory Caps Undefeated Week for Men's Soccer

BREVARD, N.C. - Luiz Pontes recorded his first multi-goal performance as a member of the Brevard College men's soccer team, as the Tornados (3-2-1) earned their second-consecutive 4-0 victory, this time over former conference foe Berea College (1-6-2) on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Pontes, a graduate transfer from Joao Pessoa, Brazil by way of Goshen College, scored twice and added an assist for a five-point effort in the win. Fifth-year senior forward Ryan Lynch, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, added his seventh goal of the season and also assisted on Pontes' first goal. Enrique Sosa scored his second goal of the week, while Rodrigo Garcia and Emil Ramstroem recorded assists.

Brevard displayed its bevy of depth on Sunday, as 31 total Tornados saw action in the match. Brevard dominated the shot tally 31-3, and the Tornado defense notched its second consecutive clean sheet.

Pontes and the Tornados wasted no time with a score in the third minute, as the graduate rebounded a Lynch shot attempt and finished the opportunity off to give Brevard the early edge.

Just 12 minutes later, Ramstroem delivered a deep ball that sailed to Sosa, and the Tornado freshman from Asuncion, Paraguay finished the scoring chance to double the Tornado lead.

Lynch notched his 41st career goal in the 21st minute, this time benefiting off a rebound from Pontes' shot attempt, as the Charlotte, North Carolina forward put the rebound in the back of the net to extend the lead. Two minutes later, Garcia was able to dispossess a Mountaineer defender and directed the ball to Pontes, who finished the one-on-one chance.

BC's defense was smothering the rest of the way, limiting the Mountaineers to just three shot attempts while collecting the shutout performance, as the Tornados finished off the 4-0 win.

A big-time home match awaits the Tornados, as Brevard welcomes Emory for a rematch of last season's 2023 NCAA DIII Tournament first-round bout. The Tornados host the Eagles on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
