BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (1-0) opened up its 2024 season with a 6-0 victory over Agnes Scott College (0-1) on Wednesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
It was a day of firsts for the Tornados, with freshman forward
Kinlee Mozley scoring her first two goals of her collegiate career while adding an assist for a five-point performance.
Mikayla Zvekan set a new career mark with a goal and two assists for four points, while
Mikayla Rubin added her first collegiate goal and assist as well.
Elis Diniz scored her first goal as a Tornado – a spot attempt after a foul in the box - with
Kiara Porcelli converting a penalty attempt as well in addition to an assist. Brevard's 53 shot attempts in the contest set a new NCAA-era single-game school record for shots in a game.
BC's defensive effort held the Scotties to just a lone shot attempt in the match, and
Nicole Arroyo (1-0) gathered her one save chance of the match. ASC keeper Olivia Rosario turned away 13 Tornado shot attempts for the Scotties.
The Tornados got their offense going in the 10
th minute after dominating possession, when Rubin kickstarted a buildup with a ball over the top that found Mozley, who passed to Zvekan. The junior from Draper, Utah finished the chance, putting the Tornados up 1-0.
Mozley scored her first collegiate goal in the 16
th minute off a Zvekan assist. Zvekan found Mozley again just three minutes later, giving Brevard a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Following just over 40 minutes of scoreless action, Porcelli was fouled hard in the box and calmly converted her penalty attempt, pushing the Tornado advantage up to a four-goal margin. Diniz, a first-year Tornado from Brazil, was fouled in the box just three minutes later and also put her penalty attempt in the back of the net, pushing the lead up to 5-0 with under 30 minutes left to play. Finally, Rubin's first collegiate goal off Porcelli's assist in the 73
rd minute capped things off in the successful season opener for the Tornados.
Brevard hits the road this weekend in a Virginia road trip to face Eastern Mennonite on Friday at 2 p.m. and Hollins on Saturday at 3 p.m.
