HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (2-0) used three second-half goals and strong defense to earn a 4-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite University (0-3) on Friday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Catie Barton, a freshman from Fletcher, North Carolina and product of nearby West Henderson High School, logged the first two goals of her collegiate career, scoring Brevard's first and third goals of the outing. Mikayla Rubin and Mikayla Zvekan each tallied their second respective goals of the season, with Hayley Kenney and Kinlee Mozley each assisting on Barton's goals.
Abby Nunez (1-0) got her first start of the season in goal for Brevard, recording seven saves en route to the fifth solo career shutout for the Homestead, Florida native.
The Tornados controlled the shot tally 23-10, while EMU narrowly edged BC in saves (8-7) and corner kicks (5-2).
Brevard took four shot attempts before Barton found the back of the net via a Mosley assist in the 30th minute, scoring following a Tornado free kick due to an offsides call on EMU. A busy 35th minute saw Nunez make three-consecutive saves to keep the Tornados on top by a goal. Neither side attempted a shot in the final 10 minutes of the half, as Brevard took its one-goal lead into the intermission.
An action-packed second half for the Tornados commenced when Zvekan opened the scoring up for Brevard less than a minute into the second 45, doubling Brevard's advantage promptly. Nunez then made a pair of saves to keep the clean sheet intact before Barton struck for her second goal of the afternoon, this time on a dish by Kenney that made it a 3-0 affair in the 57th minute. Nunez and the Tornado defense wrapped up BC's second shutout of the season, while Rubin scored her second goal of 2024 in the game's final minute as Brevard took the 4-0 decision.
The Tornados conclude the Virginia road trip tomorrow at 3 p.m. when Brevard takes on Hollins in Roanoke.
