Tornados Drop Conference Road Tilt at Mary Baldwin

Back in Action at Home this Weekend

STAUNTON, Va. – The Brevard College men's basketball team (5-6, 0-2 USAS) fell 87-63 to host Mary Baldwin (7-5, 2-0 USAS) in the USA South Conference road opener for the Tornados on Tuesday evening in Staunton, Virginia.

Freshman Twain Wilson, a three-time USA South Rookie of the Week performer this season, came off the bench to lead Brevard with 17 points in 17 minutes on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting.  Junior Jadon Carnes scored nine points to go along with team highs of five rebounds and three assists.

Graduate student Charles Reed and freshman Justen Goudelock each added seven points toward the Tornado attack.

Mary Baldwin had four players score in double figures led by Jaden Ignacio and Quentin Hart who each posted 16 points.  MBU's Zach Sloan scored 15 points and Raymond Benton added 11 in the winning effort.

The Fighting Squirrels ran out to a 7-0 lead in the game's first three minutes, then extended their lead to 16-3 with 13 minutes to play.  BC responded with a 19-6 run over the next four minutes capped off by a 3-pointer by Carnes to cut the deficit to 22-16.

MBU kept BC at bay for the remainder of the first half, taking a 34-26 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Brevard was able to cut the deficit to five points on a Brennan Wansley 3-pointer with 15:55 to play.  Mary Baldwin however would build up its lead from there and ultimately pull away for the home win.

Each team shot similarly with MBU (50%) holding a slight edge on BC (47.9%) in field goal percentage.  Both teams made an identical seven 3-pointers, however Mary Baldwin went 12-of-13 (92%) from the stripe compared to 10-of-15 (67%) for the Tornados. MBU capitalized with 20 points on 17 BC turnovers, while also recording 11 second-chance points.

Next up for Brevard is a return home to take on USA South foes Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan this weekend at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
