BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team (6-16, 3-7 USA South) defeated NC Wesleyan (9-15, 1-10 USAS) 3-1 and fell 3-0 to Southern Virginia (14-7, 8-3 USAS) in a USA South Conference tri-match on Friday at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
Brevard 3, NC Wesleyan 1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-18)
Caroline Moon,
Malahna Hoyle,
Abigail Kelly, and
Jaxson Tumicki combined for 47 of Brevard's 55 kills as the Tornado offense hit .224 for the match in their four-set triumph over NC Wesleyan.
Moon, a Woodstock, Georgia sophomore, recorded her seventh double-double of the 2025 campaign, matching the team high of 14 kills to go along with 15 digs, which was second on the team.
Malahna Hoyle also drove home 14 kills and hit .343 for the match, notching a new career high, while
Abigail Kelly added 11 kills and nine digs. Senior middle blocker Tumicki posted eight kills and led all Tornados with four solo blocks.
Sophomore setter
Izzy Boulay accumulated 40 or more assists for the third time this year, dishing out 44 dimes to her teammates while accumulating a double-double with 13 digs.
Kylie Katcher led all Tornados with 16 digs, and
Nettie Stokes served up a team-high four aces and had a career-high 10 digs.
NCW's Sadie Schramm totaled 12 kills while Jadyn Smith added 22 digs and Emilee Wilson reached double figures in assists (33) and digs (15).
The Battling Bishops were able to establish the early footing with a six-point lead early at 9-3. BC responded right back with a 5-0 scoring run, and utilized a six-point spurt later in the set to take its first lead, 16-15. The two sides went back and forth, with the frame tied at 22-all, before a Tumicki kill and a NCW error gave the Tornados set point. Following a NCW answer, Moon drove home the set-clinching kill off a Stokes assist.
NC Wesleyan responded in set number two, building up a 15-8 lead and extending it with a 5-0 run to go up by 11 at 20-9. BC did not go down quietly, however, as the Tornados scored 10 of the next 11 points to trim the deficit down to two points at 21-19. Down by three on set point, Moon registered a clutch kill followed by a Battling Bishop error as BC pulled to within a point, 24-23. Wilson clinched the set for the visitors with a kill, tying the overall match up at 1-1.
A back-and-forth third set ensued, one that featured seven ties and five lead changes. BC held a late three-point lead at 22-19 thanks to two-straight points, but the Battling Bishops scored four of the next five to tie the frame back up at 23. A NCW service error followed by another set-clinching kill by Moon put the Tornados a set away from victory.
BC used scoring runs in the middle of the fourth set to build up a dominant eight-point lead, 20-12. NCW was able to trim the deficit down to five points, 23-18, but a Hoyle kill followed by a Battling Bishop attack error clinched the match win for the Tornados, 3-1.
Southern Virginia 3, Brevard 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18)
Brevard was paced in the second match of the day by Kelly, who tallied seven kills and five digs. Moon contributed four kills and two service aces, while
Elise McIntosh posted three kills on a .600 hitting clip. Boulay dished out eight assists and served one ace, and Katcher led the Tornados with 10 digs.
Southern Virginia's offense proved efficient, hitting .267 as a team and totaling 40 kills on 90 attacks. Aubrey Packer powered the Knights with a match-high 19 kills on a .421 hitting percentage, while adding three total blocks and an ace for a 21-point performance. Anne Downs chipped in eight kills, and setter Talia Quinn directed the attack with 15 assists.
The Tornados held early momentum in the opening set, pulling even with Southern Virginia three times before the Knights surged ahead on a string of kills from Packer and Downs to close out a 25-17 win. The visitors' attack continued to click in the second, hitting .267 to take a 2-0 match lead. Brevard showed fight late in the third, narrowing the deficit to 18-16, but Southern Virginia closed on a 7-2 run to complete the sweep.
The Tornados visit Greensboro next Wednesday, October 22 at 6 p.m. before Senior Day next Saturday, with a doubleheader against William Peace beginning at 11 a.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
