BREVARD, N.C. - Julian Martin completed his first career two-goal performance, and Will Hall provided a critical insurance score as the Brevard College men's soccer team (4-5-4) held on against Warren Wilson (1-10-1), 3-2 to complete the season sweep of the Owls on Wednesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Martin, a second-year Tornado junior forward from nearby Hendersonville, North Carolina, put the Tornados on the board early in the fifth minute of the match. A successful BC attacking build up resulted in a one-on-one with WWC's keeper. Martin's first shot attempt was saved, but the forward was able to control the rebound and score to give BC the early cushion.
BC held onto its one-goal lead for 30 minutes, but a handball in the box led to a penalty kick opportunity for the Owls. WWC's Benjamin Soto converted from the spot to level the contest just prior to halftime.
Brevard held an 8-4 shot advantage in the first half of play, putting pressure on WWC's defense throughout the period. Owl keeper Connor Hefner made three saves in the first half for the visitors.
BC won a corner in the 54th minute, and German Garcia's ball sailed into the box. Brandon King was able to get his head onto the ball and directed it on target, but was denied by Hefner. Martin tapped in the rebounded shot for his second goal of the evening, as the Tornados retook the lead 2-1.
A mere 1:13 later, Brevard once again found the back of the net. Garcia played Maor Gavrilov down the near sideline, and the freshman defender whipped in a cross that was finished off by Hall to put Brevard up by two in the 55th minute.
The visitors began to change up their tactics, pressing up on attack to attempt to cut into the deficit. Over the course of the next 25 minutes, the Owls would outshoot the Tornado 5-1. In the 83rd minute, Warren Wilson cut the BC lead in half, 3-2, as the Owls scored off a free kick. Steve Moodie's spot kick was directed into the box, eventually finding Kevin Rivera for a tap-in goal.
WWC was able to put a shot on frame in the 85th minute, but BC sophomore keeper Tom Percival-Smith denied the scoring effort as Brevard held on for the 3-2 triumph.
