STAUNTON, Va. - The Brevard College volleyball team (7-21, 4-14 USA South) defeated Mary Baldwin 3-1 and fell to Methodist 3-1 in the final USA South tri-match of the season on Halloween Friday.
BREVARD 3, MARY BALDWIN 1
With the Tornados down 10-9 early in the first set, BC scored six of the next eight to go up by three points. Brevard did not trail again for the remainder of the set, scoring the final three points capped by an Emma Fontana service ace to take set one, 25-21.
The Tornados found themselves down again, 11-10, but scored five-straight to open a four-point lead in the second set. BC led by as many as nine late and took a controlling 2-0 match lead with an eight-point set win, 25-17.
BC got up early in the third. 7-3, but MBU scored eight points in a row to take an 11-7 edge. Brevard kept within striking distance, but a three-point run closed the frame out for Mary Baldwin, 25-18.
The fourth set was tight as BC withstood several MBU rallies. With the score 21-20, Brevard closed out on a 4-2 run, scoring the final two points of the match off a kill by Malahna Hoyle and a service ace from Madison Warren.
Caroline Moon finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs. Izzy Boulay (18 assists) and Warren (16 assists) ran the offense, while Kylie Katcher totaled 23 digs.
METHODIST 3, BREVARD 1
The Monarchs came out in dominant fashion, opening up a 12-3 set one lead en route to a 25-20 frame win. BC found an answer in set two, going up 10-3 early and carrying that momentum to a 25-20 win of its own. Methodist won comfortably 25-16 in the third set, and withstood a furious Tornado rally in the fourth to win the match with a two-point triumph, 25-23.
Another double-double was on deck for Moon, who registered 10 kills and 14 digs. Abigail Kelly led all Tornados with 21 digs alongside eight kills, and Boulay (18 assists) and Warren (15 assists) combined for 33 assists.
BC is back home next Tuesday, November 4 at 6 p.m. welcoming Salem to the Boshamer Gymnasium for the home finale.
