BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's soccer team (2-3-4, 1-1-1 USA South) battled back from multiple deficits to earn a thrilling 3-3 draw against Methodist University (5-2-6, 1-0-2 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Senior midfielder
Caue dos Santos delivered the late heroics, converting a penalty kick in the final seconds to equalize for the Tornados. Dos Santos also tallied an assist earlier in the match to finish with a goal and an assist on the day.
Methodist's Josh Mott netted two first-half goals — in the 15th and 27th minutes — to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Brevard responded quickly when
Enrique Sosa finished a cross from
Maor Gavrilov less than a minute later to make it 2-1 before halftime.
After a back-and-forth second half, Brevard drew level in the 70th minute when defender
Leonardo Zabeu headed home a set-piece service from dos Santos. Methodist regained the lead moments later on a strike by Steven Floyd, but Brevard's persistence paid off when dos Santos converted from the spot following a handball just before the final whistle to secure the draw.
Goalkeeper
Manuel Tovar Hagstrom recorded three saves for Brevard, while Methodist's Trey Gohr also stopped three shots. The Monarchs outshot the Tornados 19-10 and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Tornados return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. when Brevard travels to local Western North Carolina foe Warren Wilson in Swannanoa, N.C.
