Zvekan’s Brace Leads Tornados Past Monarchs

Late Winner from Senior Forward Keeps Brevard Undefeated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Senior forward Mikayla Zvekan scored twice, including an 82nd minute match-winner as the Brevard College women's soccer team (9-0-0, 3-0-0 USA South) kept its perfect season intact, defeating Methodist University (2-1-6, 1-1-2 USAS) by a final of 2-1 at Duggins Soccer Stadium.

Zvekan's two strikes came off assists from fellow seniors Olvia Guillermo and Kiara Porcelli to deliver Brevard the victory. Junior goalkeeper Abby Nunez (7-0-0) got the start in goal for the Tornados, registering two saves, while her counterpart Carolina Simpkins tallied five saves for the Monarchs.

With the triumph, Brevard extends its unbeaten streak to 27 matches dating to the end of the 2023 season. Through nine matches this fall, Brevard has outscored opponents 47-2 and continues to rank among the nation's statistical leaders. BC's nine wins to start the 2025 campaign is also the program's best-ever start to a season in the NCAA era.

Brevard wasted no time establishing the early edge, as Porcelli played a stellar through ball past the Monarch defense that Zvekan settled. The senior forward beat MU's keeper on the right side to give the Tornados the early lead in the fifth minute.

BC took a total of four shot attempts through the first 20 minutes of action, applying constant attacking pressure on Methodist.

After 41 minutes of play, however, the Monarchs found the answer on the scoreboard as Haley Cousins scored off an assist by Ally Quiroz to tie the match at one goal apiece just ahead of the halftime intermission. The score came on Methodist's second shot attempt of the afternoon, with the Tornados holding a 7-2 shot edge at the halfway point.

The Monarchs answered back offensively through the first 20 minutes of the second half, outshooting the Tornados 5-1 over that span.

BC's long-awaited winner came in the 82nd minute of play, as Guillermo found Zvekan with another perfectly-placed through ball. The Tornado senior forward came through once again, as Brevard kept its win streak intact to start 2025.

The Tornados edged Methodist in shot attempts, 10-8, with Zvekan leading the charge with four total shots and three shots on target.

Brevard will look to make it 10 wins in a row as the Tornados travel to Swannanoa, N.C. to face local Western North Carolina opponent Warren Wilson on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
