Tornados Pull Away for 3-1 First Round Victory

Zvekan Sets Single-Season Goals Record, Mascaro Reaches 100 Wins with BCWS

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (17-0-0) used two second half goals to propel itself to a 3-1 triumph over eight-seed Salem (5-8-3) on Saturday evening in the first round of the 2025 USA South Conference Tournament at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

With the win, the Tornados advance to the semifinals, as Brevard will play host to four-seed Mary Baldwin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5.

Mikayla Zvekan found the back of the net twice in the second half to set a new BCWS NCAA-era single-season record for goals scored. The Draper, Utah senior forward is already BC's NCAA-era record holder for career goals, assists, and points, and set the single-season points mark earlier this week.

Kiara Porcelli found the back of the net for the third time this season to open the scoring for the Tornados, while Olivia Guillermo and Kinlee Mozley each distributed assists. The Tornados as a team outshot Salem 31-6, including a 10-2 mark in shots on target.

The victory marked the 100th for Juan Mascaro as the Head Coach of BC women's soccer.

Porcelli fired a shot into the left corner of goal in the 26th minute to break the scoreless stalemate with the Tornado offense applying consistent attacking presence in the first half. Salem's defense bent but it did not break, holding the Tornados to just one score despite 23 shot attempts in the first half.

Salem was able to level the contest in the 51st minute of play, as Olivia Slayton scored off Darilyn Nieto's corner kick. The strike marked just the fourth goal allowed by the Tornados in 2025, and the third second-half goal the Tornados have allowed all season.

BC did not let the match stay level for long, as Guillermo took the ball down the near sideline and fed a wide open Zvekan for BC's second goal of the contest in the 57th minute. The strike brought Zvekan level with the single-season record, and also gave her the 10th game-winning goal of the campaign, which leads all of NCAA DIII.

Brevard tacked on an insurance goal in the 79th minute, as Zvekan shattered the single-season goal record off Mozley's assist.

Brevard's unbeaten streak now reaches 35 matches — the second-longest active unbeaten streak in NCAA Division III women's soccer and the second-longest active streak across all divisions of NCAA women's soccer. The Tornados will look to defend their 30-match home unbeaten streak against MBU on Wednesday, a streak that began on Oct. 18, 2022.

Through 17 matches this fall, the Tornados have outscored opponents 71-4 and continue to rank among the nation's statistical leaders both individually and as a team. BC's 17 wins to start the 2025 campaign give the Tornados far-and-away the best start to a season in program history during the NCAA era.
