BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (3-1) hit 14 3-pointers and outscored Johnson and Wales (4-1) 55-31 in the second half to earn a 20-point victory, 88-68, in the home opener on Friday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard Analee Morris scored 20-plus for the second-straight contest, exploding for a career-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. The Rockmart, Ga. native canned three 3-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds, and distributed five assists as well to serve as a catalyst for BC's big second half. Senior guard Christena Rhone made a game-high five 3-pointers en route to a 17-point performance, while Malayla Rankin also scored in double figures with 10.
Senior forward Olivia Miller grabbed a team-best 10 boards, and in her Tornado debut - senior center Schuyler Pettibone provided a second-half spark with five points and three rebounds in 14 minutes.
BC went 18-of-30 from the field in the second half, hitting seven 3-pointers in each stanza. Brevard's bench outpaced JWU's 43-19, and the Tornado defense stifled the Wildcats to just 35% shooting from the field and 23% from beyond the arc.
The visitors were able to open up a 10-point lead in the first quarter, but BC cut that advantage down to three points at the end of the period. The Wildcats went back up by as many as eight in the second quarter and held a four-point edge, 37-33 at the intermission.
Trailing by two points with 6:32 left to go in the third period, the Tornados closed the quarter out by outscoring JWU's 16-9 to take a six-point lead into the fourth quarter, 59-53.
BC held JWU off the scoreboard for over six minutes in the final period, blowing the game open with a dominant 17-0 stretch, finishing the victory off with a 20-point triumph, 88-68.
Brevard is back at home to complete the season series against Warren Wilson on Monday, November 24 at 5:30 p.m.
