Tornados Battle Toe-to-Toe with DI Gardner-Webb in Exhibition

Closest Margin vs. DI in 10 Years

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team put up a fierce fight against NCAA Division I Gardner Webb University (1-11) before the Runnin' Bulldogs secured their first win of the season with a 77-63 result on Friday evening at Paul Porter Arena.

The 14-point margin was Brevard's closest against a NCAA DI opponent since joining Division III, and is the program's closest margin against DI since Nov. 7, 2015 vs. UNC Asheville (12 points, 76-64).

Twain Wilson led the charge for the Tornados with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Khalil Black scored 10 off the bench for Brevard on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field, while Dre'Shaun Brown added six points and five rebounds. Malachi McLean (nine points) and Tyler Baldwin (8 points) also contributed heavily for the Tornados.

GWU was paced by Jacob Hogarth's game-high 23 points and staggering 23 rebounds, as the entire Runnin' Bulldog starting five reached double figures. Hogarth was joined by Spence Sims (13 points), Colin Hawkins (12 points), Ace Talbert (11 points), and Curtis Williams (10 points). Gardner-Webb's starters accounted for 69 of its 77 total points.

The hosts outshot Brevard 53% to 46% from the field, but the Tornados had five made 3's to GWU's one. GWU held a 38-25 edge on the glass and scored 62 of its 77 points in the paint, while the Tornados racked up 31 bench points.

BC is back to regular season play tomorrow, hosting JWU Charlotte on Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Bosh.
