ATLANTA - The Brevard College men's basketball team (5-4) returned to the hardwood on Monday after its holiday break, falling by a final of 86-75 to Sewanee (3-7) on the first day of the Jack Berkshire Classic, hosted by Oglethorpe at the Dorough Fieldhouse.
Sewanee used a 50-point first half in which it shot 60% from the field (18-for-30) to propel itself to the double-digit triumph. Brevard hit 10 3-pointers in the second half, but the Tornados were unable to mount a comeback attempt as the Tigers pulled away for the 11-point victory.
Jadon Carnes stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points on 8-of-16 from the field with five made 3-pointers. Carnes grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and added six assists as well to facilitate BC's offense. Twain Wilson matched Carnes with 21 points, going 8-of-12 from the field with four made threes. Dre'Shaun Brown rounded out the double-digit Tornados with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while KK Horton dished out a team-best seven dimes.
Nikolas Avaliani exploded for 33 points with 12 made field goals, four 3-pointers, and five free throws. Fletcher Bigham (17 points), Jack Bakken (14 points), and Reid Carrier (13 points) also reached double figures for Sewanee.
Sewanee held a narrow two-point lead, 18-16, midway through the first half. From that point forward, the Tigers were able to open up a 20-point lead, 45-25, thanks to a 27-9 scoring stretch. BC trimmed the deficit to 14 as Sewanee took a 50-36 edge into the break.
The Tigers withstood a few Tornado rallies in the second half but ultimately never let Brevard within less than double digits as Sewanee capped off its 86-75 victory.
The Tornado return to action tomorrow as Brevard closes action at the Jack Berkshire Classic against Oglethorpe at 4 p.m.
