Parkins Joins 1,000-Point Club in Narrow Loss at SVU

Fourth Tornado to Score All 1,000 at BC in NCAA Era

BUENA VISTA, Va. - Fifth-year senior forward Makenna Parkins became the fourth Tornado to score 1,000 career points in a Brevard College uniform in the NCAA era, but the BC women's basketball team (14-5, 9-3 USA South) narrowly fell 70-58 to first-place Southern Virginia (17-2, 11-0 USAS) on Saturday evening in Buena Vista, Virginia.

Parkins, a native of Marion, North Carolina, exploded for a season-high 25 points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark, going 8-for-17 from the field with three made 3-pointers and six made free throws, while also grabbing a team-best five rebounds. Naliyah Boyce also reached double figures with 10 points, while Josie Hester added eight points and three boards.

Three Knights reached double digits, with Addison Newman leading the charge with 15 points. Aysia Foster added 14 points with Ruth Kempler scoring 13 points with a perfect 6-for-6 mark at the charity stripe. SVU went 15-for-17 overall at the free throw line while going 41.7% from the field.

SVU capitalized on BC's turnovers, scoring 18 points off mistakes while putting up 13 second-chance points. SVU's bench outscored Brevard's 15-5, and doubled up BC in the paint 32-16, while outpacing Brevard in transition 16-1.

SVU took a 15-9 lead after the first period of action, and led by as many as 14 in the second quarter before BC battled back, cutting the deficit to six points, 29-23 at the break. The six-point margin would prove to be as close as Brevard would get until the fourth quarter, with SVU holding an 11-point edge 49-38 after the third stanza.

With Parkins leading the charge, Brevard cut the deficit to five points twice, most recently at 55-50 with 4:51 left to play. However, the Knights finished the game off on a 15-8 stretch to claim the 12-point victory, 70-58.

BC remains off of game action until Wednesday, February 12 with a 6 p.m. road test at Salem.
