GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Brevard College women's lacrosse team began its 2025 campaign on the road, dropping a tight 9-7 decision to Guilford (1-0) on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon at Appenzeller Field in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Arianna Casertano led the way for BC goalscorers, finding the back of the net three times with two assists for five total points. Emily Denaga added two goals, one assists, and four draw controls, while Xan Hill recorded a pair of goals. Madi Norris grabbed six ground balls, and Alyse Moore caused a team-best four turnovers. Kyla Smith-Fondall (0-1) made 11 saves while playing the entire game in goal for BC.
Carm DeFeo led the Quakers with three goals, while Emma Garland also scored multiple goals with two. Six different Guilford players reached the scoring column, and DeFeo helped lead the defensive charge for the hosts as well with four caused turnovers.
DeFeo got the scoring started at the nine minute mark in the first quarter with an unassisted goal, but Casertano put in an assist from Denaga that tied things up. Hill scored an unassisted strike before Casertano's second goal of the afternoon - a power-play goal that gave BC a 3-1 edge. Guilford trimmed the deficit in half off a goal by Riley Gravely, as Brevard held a narrow 3-2 lead after one quarter of action.
Guilford continued its run, scoring two goals in a low-scoring second period to take a 4-3 lead into the intermission.
Both sides traded goals to start the third period before Guilford rattled off three goals in a row to hold an 8-4 edge. BC scored two out of the next three goals to trim the deficit to three, 9-6.
Denaga scored an unassisted goal at the 9:18 mark of three fourth period, but the Quakers held BC scoreless over the final nine minutes of action to earn the two-goal victory, 9-7.
The Tornados are back in action Sunday for their home opener at 1 p.m. against Linfield.
