Wildcats Pounce in Home Opener over Tornados, 17-2

Denaga and Norris Score for BC; Smith-Fondall Tallies 12 Saves

BREVARD, N.C. – Emily Denaga and Madi Norris found the back of the net for the Brevard College women's lacrosse team (0-2), but seven different Linfield Wildcats (1-1) scored goals in a 17-2 defeat for the Tornados in their home opener on Sunday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Denaga and Norris scored off assists by Grace Blanton and Xan Hill, while Kyla Smith-Fondall (0-2) handled goalkeeping duties with 12 saves and six ground balls. Kelsey Hamrick and Alyse Moore each caused a pair of Wildcat turnovers, while Hamrick added three ground balls to BC's ledger. Arianna Casertano, Hamrick, and Hill each won two draw controls apiece as well.

Linfield's high-powered offense was propelled by Mackenzie Kulick, who scored five goals. Maizri Chandler and Madison DeLatrinidad each tallied three scores apiece, with Gabby Crist and Evelyn Cross also scoring multiple goals with two each. The Wildcats assisted on 10 of their 17 goals, as Savannah Irwin led the charge with three dimes. Irwin snatched up a team-best six ground balls, and Maya Wright controlled the circle for the Wildcats with seven draw controls.

Brevard halted a 5-0 Linfield scoring run at the 4:27 mark in the first period, when Norris scored her first goal of the season off a Hill assist in the power play. That would prove to be BC's lone goal of the first half, as the Wildcats scored six-straight to take an 11-1 lead into the locker rooms.

Linfield added five more goals to its lead before Denaga found the back of the net with 1:08 remaining in the third period off a Blanton assist. The Tornado defense kept Linfield off the scoresheet for the next 11 minutes of play before the Wildcats sent their 17th and final goal with 5:23 to play.

The Tornados will return to action on Thursday, February 27 at 6 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Virginia as BC takes on Eastern Mennonite in part of a two-game road swing in Virginia.
