MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer Falcons (11-7, 7-2 USA South) outscored the Brevard College men's basketball team (10-9, 5-5 USAS) 19-11 over the final six minutes of action to take a six-point victory, 81-75, in a USA South Conference battle on Tuesday evening at the Merner Gym in Misenheimer, North Carolina.
The late rally thwarted a career effort from senior guard
Charlie Hester, who scored a career-high 23 points on eight made field goals – four of which being from long distance – with a perfect 3-for-3 mark at the free throw line. Hester added four rebounds and three steals as well. Fellow senior guard
KK Horton added 17 points with seven made field goals to go alongside three rebounds and three steals.
Jadon Carnes, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, stuffed the box score with 11 points, five assists, and four rebounds.
Daymon Beckwith led all Falcons with 23 points with four rebounds and a game-best four steals, as Pfeiffer had three double-digit scorers as well. Doug Smith added 14 points on a flawless 6-of-6 mark from the field, and Justin Gaten added 11 points.
Pfeiffer shot 52.8% compared to a 46.4% mark from the Tornados, who failed to eclipse the 50% mark from the field for just the seventh time this season. BC more than doubled up the Falcons from beyond the arc with a 9-4 edge, but Pfeiffer hit seven more free throws than Brevard with a highly-efficient 21-for-25 mark. The Falcons dominated the glass 37-23, and outscored BC 42-20 off the bench. Pfeiffer also utilized a 44-32 edge on points down low, and scored 17 second-chance points to Brevard's six.
Hester got things going for Brevard, converting a four-point play on a made 3-pointer followed by a free throw after a foul. Hester had all eight of BC's points through the first four-plus minutes of action, as Brevard took an 8-7 edge into the game's first timeout.
BC opened up a 15-9 lead thanks to a quick 7-0 spurt, and after a Falcon three-point play cut the Tornado lead to three, Hester drained his third 3-pointer of the early goings to push the Brevard lead back up to six with 12 minutes left in the half.
Pfeiffer slightly outpaced BC 7-5 over the next four-plus minutes of action to trim the deficit to four points, 23-19, with 7:22 left to go in the first half.
Brock McKnight drilled a 3-pointer that gave BC its biggest lead of the half at seven points, 26-19. Pfeiffer went on a 9-2 run over the next 2:50 that tied the contest at 28 apiece with four minutes left in the first half. The Falcons hit a pair of free throws to take their first lead since the first minute of the contest, 30-28.
Hester answered back with a pair of free throws, bringing his first half scoring total to 16 points. Hester then knocked in his sixth field goal of the first stanza off an assist by Carnes, trimming Pfeiffer's lead down to a point, 33-32. Pfeiffer scored six of the next eight points, however, to take a five point edge 39-34 – while a failed inbounds forced BC to take its second timeout of the half at the 1:28 mark.
Carnes scored a pair of layups out of the timeout that cut the deficit back down to one point, 39-38. A pair of Falcon free throws gave the hosts a three-point halftime lead, 41-38. Hester led all players at the intermission with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting with three made 3-pointers and a perfect 3-for-3 mark at the free throw line. Carnes added six points with three boards, and
Carson Evans put up five off the pine. Pfeiffer outshot BC 52% to 45% in the first period and controlled the boards 17-12. The Falcons outpaced the Tornados 13-2 in transition, while BC led points off turnovers 12-5 and knocked in three more 3-pointers than Pfeiffer.
Hester drained another 3-pointer to bring his total to 21 for the contest, and bring Brevard within two points, down 48-46 with 15:43 left to go. Horton scored the next six points on three driving buckets, as BC trailed 54-52 at the under-12 media timeout. Horton went right back to work on Brevard's next possession, scoring off an assist by Hester that tied the affair at 54-all. Pfeiffer scored the next five points to retake the lead, 59-54.
Dre'Shaun Brown halted the run with a pair of made free throws at the 8:09 mark, with the Falcons clinging to a three-point edge 59-56. Goudelock hit an and-one layup that cut the deficit to one, and McKnight came up big with a 3-pointer off a Carnes assist that tied things up at 62. Horton followed suit with another driving layup off a steal that gave Brevard the lead, 64-62, with 6:23 left to go.
Pfeiffer was able to score the next four points off a 3-pointer and a free throw before Hester reached a new career high with a layup that gave him 23 points for the contest. Two offensive boards on one possession for Pfeiffer led to the Falcons retaking the lead, 68-66. Doug Smith scored his 14
th point of the contest as the Falcons extended the lead out to four points, but a technical foul allowed BC to pull back within three, 70-67 with 3:55 left to go.
Beckwith matched Hester's 23 points to take Pfeiffer up five, 72-67. Two more crucial offensive boards by the Falcons led to an and-one layup that shot the hosts up to a seven-point lead, 75-68 with 1:38 to play.
Horton hit a midrange jumper to pull BC back within five. The Falcons hit one free throw on the other end to extend its margin to six points, with Horton also going 1-for-2 at the stripe with 41 seconds to play. Pfeiffer went up by seven thanks to made free throws, but
Charles Reed drained BC's ninth 3-pointer of the contest to cut the deficit back down to four, 79-75. Pfeiffer was able to ice the contest at the stripe, hitting its next two free throws and getting a stop on the defensive end to seal the deal, 81-75.
The Tornados will return to action this Saturday on the road, taking on Methodist in Fayetteville, North Carolina at 2 p.m.
