DANVILLE, Va. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (0-1) opened its 2025 season on Sunday afternoon, falling to Averett (1-0) 14-6 at Frank R. Campbell Stadium in Danville, Virginia.
Junior Gage Khayat led Brevard with three goals on eight total shots and a team-high six shots-on-goal.Â
Freshman Joseph Piazza made his collegiate debut with one goal and one assist. Piazza also led the Tornados with seven ground balls.
Michael Peters matched the team-high with eight shots and found the back of the net for his first goal of 2025. Scott Bundy scored a goal on his lone shot taken, while Brice Peterson notched an assist.
Goalkeeper Jack Hicks started and played the entire game for BC, registering ten saves. Logan Southern won 11-of-21 faceoffs in the season-opener.Â
Averett was led offensively by Tigran Ceesay who scored three goals to go along with an assist. Cameron Prutzman earned the victory in goal for the Cougars.
Brevard opened the game with an early lead as Piazza scored his first career goal with a strong shot from the top of the circle, just 1:16 after the opening whistle. Just two minutes later, Piazza set up Khayat with an assist as the Tornados seized a 2-0 advantage.
The Cougars with five consecutive goals to take a 5-2 lead at the end of the first period.
The second stanza started with over four minutes of scoreless play until Bundy delivered on a man-up goal off an assist from Peterson to cut the deficit to two. Averett again answered, this time with a goal just 11 seconds later followed by another goal with 8:46 left in the half.
Tough defense and strong goalkeeping resulted in a shoutout for both sides over the final eight minutes of the opening half. Averett however would strike for three consecutive goals to start the third period to build a 10-3 lead
Khayat scored late in both the third and fourth quarters, while Peters found a goal in the fourth as well. The deficit proved too much to overcome for the Tornados however as Averett took the season-opener for both squads.
Next up for Brevard is the 2025 home opener at 6 p.m. on Friday vs. Mount Vernon Nazarene at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
