Brevard Wins Big at Pfeiffer to Start 2-0 in USA South

Tornados Cruise in First Road Conference Game

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Brevard College women's lacrosse team (3-3, 2-0 USA South) went on the road and defeated host Pfeiffer (1-4, 0-1 USAS) 17-5 on Tuesday evening in Misenheimer. North Carolina.  With the win, the Tornados improved to 2-0 in the USA South Conference and extended their win streak to three straight games overall.  BC has outscored its opponents 47-10 over the three-game win streak.

Senior Emily Denaga was sensational, matching her career high of seven goals in the road win.  Denaga also added an assist, while recording three ground balls, three caused turnovers and 10 won draw controls.  It marked the third time that Denaga has scored seven goals in a game.  The native of Buford, Georgia scored seven goals at Greensboro last season and in a home game vs. Piedmont as a sophomore.

Sophomore Ariana Casertano recorded a career-high of her own with five goals to go along with an assist.  Casertano's previous high was four goals set during her freshman year at N.C. Wesleyan.

Junior Xan Hill registered two goals and two assists, while sophomore Madi Norris scored two goals as well.  Senior Grace Blanton recorded a goal with an assist, and Kelsey Hamrick added an assist, to round out the scoring for the victors.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kyla Smith-Fondall recorded five saves and earned the win after holding Pfeiffer to just five goals over the entire 60 minutes.

The Falcons were led by Emma LaFave and Cerys Reid who each scored two goals.  Pfeiffer goalkeeper Dakota Dominic notched ten saves in the defeat.

Brevard outshot Pfeiffer 35-11 with 27 of BC's shots coming on goal. The Tornados dominated on draw controls, winning 21 of the 24 available opportunities.

The Tornados jumped ahead early as Denaga won the opening draw control, then set up Casertano for a goal just 38 seconds into the contest.  Five minutes later, Casertano delivered again on a free-position shot which was followed by Denaga's first goal to give BC a 3-0 lead.

After the Falcons scored their first goal, Hill found the back of the net to give BC a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period.

BC's Kelsey Hamrick won the draw control to open the second period which led to another goal by Denaga, this time off an assist by Casertano.  The Tornados would go on to put together a 6-0 scoring run to take a 9-1 lead capped off by goals by Hill and Denaga.  Pfeiffer then cut the lead to 9-3 with two goals late in the second quarter to take the two teams to halftime.

Brevard's defense locked down in the third and fourth quarters, holding Pfeiffer to just one goal in each period.  Meanwhile, the scoring parade continued for the Tornados with eight goals in the second half en route to the 17-5 victory.

Brevard returns to action with another USA South road game on Saturday with a trip to Fayetteville, North Carolina to take on Methodist at 1 p.m.
