Tornados Plate Nine-Straight to Open Series in Cary with 13-7 Win

Big Ninth Inning Seals Six-Run Win for Brevard

CARY, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (14-19, 9-6 USA South) scored nine-straight runs to pull away from William Peace University (10-24, 5-11 USAS) 13-7 on Friday evening at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

Trailing 7-4 after five innings, BC began its rally with three runs in the top of the sixth to tie things up, 7-7. Frankie Vasquez then came across to score on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh, proving to be the ultimate difference in the game. BC then brought five insurance runs across to score in the top of the ninth, and Matthew Evans (3-3) capped off his stellar relief appearance by sealing the six-run win up in the ninth.

CP Pyle led the way with a three-hit performance for Brevard, going 3-for-6 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Vasquez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored - including the eventual game-winner - and Davis Bryson, who got the start at third base, went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Hunter Busque notched his first collegiate triple, and Hayden Jennings added a double as the Tornados logged 12 total hits and three extra-base knocks.

Evans earned his third victory of the season, coming on in relief to provide four innings of shutout work. The Yulee, Florida native surrendered just four hits and struck out one Pacers as well.

A fielder's choice RBI allowed the Tornados to score first, with Cale Oehler coming around to score. The Pacers answered with two runs in the bottom-half of the inning, but the Tornados punched back with a run in the top of the third (Jennings RBI double) and two in the top of the fourth (Busque on an error, Bryson RBI single) to put BC up 4-2.

A big fifth inning for the hosts ensued, with WPU scoring five times, taking advantage of a few Tornado miscues to open a 7-4 lead up.

WPU's lead would not last long, however, as the Tornados scored three in the sixth to tie things back up. Lucas Granata scored on a wild pitch before Pyle's RBI double brought Luke Morton in to score. Finally, Pyle came in on an error, tying the game up at seven runs apiece.

Vasquez came in on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh, and Brevard iced things by scoring five in the top of the ninth to pull away with the 13-7 victory.

The Tornados and Pacers will match up two more times, with Brevard and William Peace beginning a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
