Pacers Sweep Tornados on Saturday to Take Series

Final Week of Regular Season on Deck

CARY, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (14-20, 9-8 USA South) dropped just its second series of the season, falling 12-10 and 5-1 in the final two games of a three-game set to William Peace University (12-24, 7-11 USAS) on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

The Tornados, who won the first game of the series 13-7 on Friday, saw a late rally come up just short in Saturday's first contest. The Pacers held BC to just one run on four hits in the series finale, as WPU won its third USA South series of 2025.

GAME ONE: WILLIAM PEACE 12, BREVARD 10

The Tornados, who used nine-consecutive runs to aide themselves to a game-one win on Friday, saw the Pacers score 11-straight runs in the second game of the series to propel themselves towards victory.

BC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Frankie Vasquez launched his 14th career homer, a two-run shot, out of the ballpark. CP Pyle then drew a bases-loaded walk that extended the early Tornado lead to a 3-0 margin.

WPU went on to score two in the second and one in the third to tie the contest up, 3-3. From there, the Pacers added a run in the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and three in the seventh as the hosts built up a commanding 11-3 lead.

BC started to chip away as Hayden Jennings drove in a run on a bases-loaded HBP in the top of the eighth. Davis Bryson then scored on a passed ball ahead of Pyle, who scored on a Pacer error. Vasquez kept the line moving with an infield single that scored Jennings, and Luke Morton trimmed the deficit all the way down to two runs at 11-9 thanks to a two-RBI single to cap off a six-run eighth for the Tornados.

WPU was able to plate a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to push its lead back up to a three-run margin. Pyle was able to drive Patrick Usher in on a sacrifice fly, however consecutive outs gave the Pacers the win to even the series up.

Morton went 3-for-5 at the dish with two RBI and a run scored, while Hunter Busque and Vasquez each recorded a pair of base hits. Seven different Tornados logged hits in the first game of the afternoon.

GAME TWO: WILLIAM PEACE 5, BREVARD 1

Despite an improved pitching performance for the Tornados in the series finale, the Pacers out-dueled BC, stifling Brevard's offense to just one run on four hits.

Cale Oehler led things off with an RBI double in the top of the first, but that would prove to be all the offense Brevard could muster. BC stranded a total of eight base runners through the final game of the series, with Bryson, Jennings, Oehler, and Pyle logging hits.

The Pacers tied the contest with a run in the bottom of the first before taking the lead for good with an RBI ground out in the bottom of the second. WPU added two insurance runs in the sixth and another for good measure in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacob Thompson (1-2) got the start for BC in the series finale, working 5.1 innings with eight hits and four runs (three earned) allowed with no walks and three strikeouts. Zack Wilson pitched 1.2 innings with an unearned run surrendered, and Andy Fahringer threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

The Tornados return home, first competing in a midweek against Bob Jones on Tuesday, April 22 at 4 p.m. before the final conference series of 2025 over the weekend. BC will host Mary Baldwin, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. and finishing up with a game on Senior Day Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. at Gil Coan Field.
