BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (16-20, 11-8 USA South) pulled out a doubleheader sweep over Mary Baldwin Universigy (6-33, 4-16 USAS) on Senior Day Saturday with a pair of wins, 8-7 and 10-3, at Gil Coan Field.
Brevard answered back after Mary Baldwin took a 7-5 lead in the sixth inning of game one, scoring three in the seven and holding MBU off the board the rest of the way to take a one-run win, 8-7. The Tornados then used late offense to cap off a seven-run victory in game two, 10-3.
A total of 19 Brevard College seniors were honored in a special pre-game ceremony prior to first pitch.
GAME ONE: BREVARD 8, MARY BALDWIN 7
Brevard got things started in game number one as Logan Sawyer drove in CP Pyle on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, as the Tornados took a 1-0 lead. MBU answered in the top of the second with a run of its own, but BC scored twice in the bottom-half of the second as Nico Bartolotti and Davis Bryson notched back-to-back RBI doubles to extend the Tornado lead to a 3-1 margin.
MBU hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the third to pull within a run, but Frankie Vasquez answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer to left-center that put the Tornados up by three. The round-tripper marked the 15th of his career.
The visitors would not go away quietly in game one, however, striking for a big five-run sixth to take their first lead of the game, 7-5.
Luke Morton came up with a crucial two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, while Vasquez scored the eventual game-winning run on a double play that put Brevard back up by one, 8-7.
Matthew Evans (4-3) came up huge in relief once again for the Tornados, recording his fourth win of 2025 after finishing game one out with three scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit.
Morton went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while Vasquez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. CP Pyle stole a base for Brevard, while Bartolotti and Bryson notched doubles.
GAME TWO: BREVARD 10, MARY BALDWIN 3
The Tornados scored five in the fourth, and capped off their doubleheader sweep by scoring four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth in a seven-run game-two triumph.
BC racked up 14 hits in the second contest, with Bartolotti breaking out with a 4-for-4 day at the dish. Jennings stuffed the box score in a 3-for-5 output, hitting a solo home run, scoring three runs, and driving in four RBI. Cale Oehler and Sawyer each had two hits apiece, with Bryson, Lucas Granata, and Vasquez also logging base knocks.
Jacob Thompson (2-1) turned in a masterful start in his final appearance at Gil Coan Field. The senior from Gray, Georgia went seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs while matching his career-high with six strikeouts. Thompson became Brevard's new NCAA-era leader in career innings pitched, and came off to a standing ovation after retiring the side in the seventh.
Fellow hurlers Zack Wilson and Gage Granata also worked scoreless relief innings on the mound for Brevard.
Neither side could score a run for the first three-and-a-half innings, but Jennings broke up the stalemate with a leadoff solo shot in the bottom of the fourth. Oehler logged an RBI single to double the lead before Bartolotti pushed a single through the right side of the infield that brought two Tornados around to score. Bryson capped off the five-run frame with an RBI groundout.
Mary Baldwin answered back, using three doubles in the top of the sixth to bring three runs across to score, as the Fighting Squirrels cut the deficit to two runs at 5-3.
Jennings came across for an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error, pushing the Tornado lead up to three. The Beaufort, South Carolina senior came through in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-clearing, three RBI double that put the Tornados up by six. Sawyer then capped off the productive eighth with a sacrifice fly that brought Jennings around to score.
Gage Granata put up a zero in the top of the ninth, as the Tornados finished off senior day with a doubleheader sweep.
Brevard and Mary Baldwin will conclude the three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
