BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College softball team (8-15, 4-8 USA South) picked up a 5-1 game-one victory over William Peace University (18-16, 5-9 USAS) to highlight Senior Day Friday at the BC Softball Field.
The Tornados honored its five seniors
Gabby Hooper,
Lauren Mann,
Olivia Martinez,
Karley Queen, and
Valarie Sorrell, in a special pregame ceremony prior to first pitch.
Brevard took a four-run win in the first game, scoring the game's first five runs with a RBI single in the third, a passed ball in the fourth, a two-RBI double, and a steal of home in the bottom of the fifth. WPU answered with a run of its own in the top of the sixth, but the Pacers were unable to rally as the Tornados took game one.
WPU answered with nine unanswered runs in game number two, nearly tossing a complete-game shutout before the Tornados struck for a pair in the bottom of the sixth to keep the contest alive. The Pacers finished things off with a shutdown seventh, splitting the Good Friday doubleheader.
GAME ONE: BREVARD 5, WILLIAM PEACE 1
Brevard's offense was sparked by four multi-hit performances, led by sophomore 3B
Andrea Furr's 3-for-3 effort at the dish.
Alyssa Boris (2-for-4),
Rylee Locklear (2-for-4), and
Analee Morris (2-for-2) all totaled two hits apiece, while
Elizabeth Auciello,
Addison Smith, and
Regan Winkler also connected for base knocks as the Tornados totaled 12 as a unit. Boris, Furr, and Locklear all connected for doubles, Morris stole a career-high three bases, and
Michaela Jones, Locklear, and Smith notched stolen bags as well.
Auciello (4-6) recorded her third complete-game of the season, and her second in seven innings, as she dealt a five-hit, one-run CG performance with a pair of strikeouts.
Following two-and-a-half scoreless frames, Boris got things going with an RBI to center that scored Morris in the bottom of the third. Morris then drew a fourth-inning walk, while
Anna Graves came across to score on a WPU passed ball to double the Tornado lead through four, 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Locklear roped a two-RBI double to left field, bringing Boris and Winkler both across to score. Auciello then helped her own cause, putting a single into play and getting caught in a rundown. Locklear used heads-up baserunning to score, putting BC up by five runs, 5-1.
The Pacers used an RBI single of their own in the top of the sixth to trim the deficit down to four, but Auciello and the Tornado defense was able to hold tough, erasing a one-out single with consecutive outs in the top of the seventh to clinch BC's fourth conference win of the season.
GAME TWO: WILLIAM PEACE 9, BREVARD 2
The Pacers were able to find their answer with a strong showing in the second game of the doubleheader. WPU led the game off with consecutive doubles to score first, took advantage of a fielding error to make it 2-0, and used a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 edge after the first inning.
A sacrifice bunt RBI put WPU up 4-0 after three, and the Pacers tacked on three runs in the fourth and fifth frames with two RBI triples and an RBI single as WPU led 7-0 after five innings. The Pacers added two to their margin in the top of the sixth before the Tornados put together a two-out sixth-inning rally.
With one out, senior catcher Martinez recorded a pinch-hit single to center. Brevard was then down to its final out before Furr reached on a fielding error.
Jadyn Harlow then put the ball in play and reached on an infield single. Smith capped the frame off with a two-RBI single to right-center, pulling BC back within seven.
The effort was too late for the Tornados, however, who fell 9-2 as the Pacers slammed the door in the seventh.
Brevard is back for another crucial USA South DH on Monday, April 21 as the Tornados take on Greensboro, beginning at 1 p.m.
