MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Roi Abutbul found the back of the net for the first time as a Tornado, as the Brevard College men's soccer team (0-1-1) drew 1-1 with Maryville College (0-1-1) in the final match of the Maryville Kickoff Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Abutbul, a junior forward from Jerusalem, Israel who previously competed at Dallas College and Monroe University, scored BC's first goal of 2025 off an assist from Tristan Bayssade, a graduate student from Theix, France by way of Kansas Wesleyan University.
Defensively, freshman keeper Manuel Tovar Hagstrom saw action for all 90 minutes in goal, making six saves in his second collegiate start.
Shots and corner kicks were nearly even in the competitive match, with Maryville narrowly outshooting Brevard 14-to-13, while both teams won five corner kicks each.
Maryville was on the attack early, taking three shots on-target within the first seven minutes of play, all of which saved by Tovar Hagstrom - who denied the Scots for a fourth time in the ninth minute.
German Garcia took Brevard's first attempt of the game in the 11th minute before the Tornados got on the score sheet for the first time in the 2025 season. Bayssade crossed the ball with his right foot into the left side of the box, and an unmarked Abutbul nestled the ball into the left side of goal.
Maryville was able to answer back in the 32nd minute, as Brady Hammer put in a Will Gallaher assist to tie the score at one apiece, which would hold until the halftime intermission.
BC applied attacking pressure through the early stages of the second half, outshooting MC 4-0 through the first 20 minutes of the period.
Maryville put a pair of shots on-frame next, but both attempts were turned away by Tovar Hagstrom. Freshman forward Will Hall tested MC keeper Tanner Ricks in the 78th minute, while Roi Kedar (87th minute) and Bayssade (89th minute) ripped late-game chances, but the Scot defense held firm as the contest resulted in a draw.
Brevard returns to action on the road Saturday, September 6, as the Tornados take on Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia with kickoff slated for 2 p.m. BC's anticipated home-opener is on Saturday, September 13 at 2 p.m. against Centre College at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
