Rubin’s First-Half Goal Holds Up in 1-0 Victory for Tornados

Tornados Dominate Possession with 45 Shot Attempts

BREVARD, N.C. – Sophomore midfielder Mikayla Rubin's goal in the 29th minute of action was all Brevard College women's soccer (4-0-0) needed, as the Tornados held Averett University (1-3-1) off the scoreboard for 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

With the win, Brevard's current unbeaten streak now reaches 22 consecutive matches, dating back to the end of the 2023 season. BC also pushes its current home unbeaten streak to 21 matches dating to October 15, 2022. Through four matches in 2025, Brevard is outscoring its opponents 27-0, and has kept opposition from scoring through 360 minutes of play this season.

Rubin's 29th-minute strike off a header was her third goal of the young season, coming from a Mikayla Zvekan cross. The Draper, Utah senior forward now has 20 career assists, as she set the career assist mark earlier in the week for the NCAA era at BC.

Zvekan dodged traffic, cutting through a couple Cougar defenders before ripping her cross from the right side of the box. The powerful cross found the head of Rubin to break the stalemate up.

Despite a 45-to-2 overall shot advantage, the Tornados were held out of the goal for the remainder of the contest. Averett's goalkeeper Tila Chrons, a junior hailing from Helsinki, Finland, made a staggering 24 saves, and the Cougars added a team save for 25 total stops to keep Brevard off the scoresheet for the rest of the match.

Nico Arroyo, a senior keeper from Yulee, Florida, made her second start of the season, posting a complete-game shutout with a pair of saves to deny the Cougars.

Following Saturday's action, the Tornados are outshooting opponents 163-to-15 so far in 2025, with Brevard averaging 40.8 shots-per-game.

The Tornados continue their lengthy four-match homestand on Tuesday, September 16 at 5 p.m. as Brevard squares off against Carolina University at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
