FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team (3-10, 1-1 USA South) opened USA South Conference play with a tri-match split Saturday afternoon, falling to Methodist (6-8, 1-1) before sweeping Mary Baldwin (5-5, 0-1).
Methodist 3, Brevard 0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-16)
Methodist controlled the first two sets wire-to-wire with identical 25-17 wins. In the third, a late five-point run helped the Monarchs finish the sweep with a 25-16 victory.
Caroline Moon and
Jaxson Tumicki paced Brevard with seven kills apiece, while
Emma Fontana recorded three service aces. Addison Johnson tallied 14 kills and Savannah Hovander added 11 to lead the Monarchs.
Brevard 3, Mary Baldwin 0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-12)
Mary Baldwin jumped out to a 4-0 start in the first set and built a six-point lead before a five-point Brevard run swung momentum. The Tornados pulled away for a 25-18 opening win.
Brevard never trailed in the second, building an 11-point cushion en route to a 25-13 decision. The Tornados then scored nine of the first 10 points in the third and cruised to a 25-12 victory to clinch the sweep.
Moon posted 11 kills to lead Brevard, while Kelly and Fontana added six apiece. Brooklyn Prince and Crystal Newman paced the Fighting Squirrels with three kills each.
Brevard returns home Wednesday, Sept. 24, to host Greensboro at 6 p.m.
